Yeah i saw this on another forum, i ordered 4,000 boxes, 2,000 boxes of each kind. And 20 rolls of stickers...I want to see if they actually send me that many. :p

But you get them when you get priority anyhow. It is nice to package the item at home, can get it all nicely packaged instead of tossed in.

This isn't true, well maybe it is in principle but not in practice. One of USPS Priority Mail's perks is 'free' shipping supplies such as boxes and labels. In actuality the cost is already built into the rate, but there is no extra charge if you use their boxes or other supplies in the Priority Mail area (note that tape is not one of the available supplies). So, it doesn't matter if you supply your own box or use one of USPS's - the shipping charge is exactly the same.

Agreed - asking for 2500 or 4000 boxes when you know you will never use them is wasteful and quite childlike.
I could see an online reseller wanting that many - at least they'd use them. But what are you going to do with 4000 boxes? You're going to end up throwing them out...so why bother?

I sell alot of stuff on ebay and half. Granted it'll take me over a year to use 2500 boxes, but I'll use em.

You would have to use 7 boxes a day to get rid of them in a year. That would be a full-time job.

I understand this is a rhetorically question for those ordering rediculous quantities with no intent on using them for USPS shipping. However, the answer is... because it's money for nothing... it's free... because I can... because I'm only thinking of myself, forget the rest of you, catch me if you can. It's just a bit different than the golden rule: "All things therefore that you want people to DO to you, DO thus to them" (Matthew 7:12).
I ordered 25 of each. I could use some boxes, I'm always looking for some when it comes to ship stuff
There used to be a max, it's somewhere on the order page. I think it was 25 or 50 of certain items, etc. I know I STILL have remaining boxes from when I ordered my supplies over a year ago.

The problem is yes, to you it is free. But someone is paying for it and if people abuse it, something will give and eventually no one may be able to use this service anymore or prices may go up. This goes towards shoplifting and other theft too. If a store is losing money because people are ripping them off, stealing from them, taking advantage of them, etc. they will find a way to make up for that. In the long run it affects not only you and me but everyone everywhere.

I ordered some of those boxes a long time ago. I used the tape and boxes when I moved. Most of the boxes are pretty small, but perfect for packing little things.
I think that ordering an excessive number of boxes might be couterproductive. It is not nice to tick off your letter carrier because they might take their frustrations out on your future packages. It would be a shame if your income tax refund check or something else important got "lost in the mail" among your 1000 boxes of boxes.

I ordered a roll of tape and a few sets of labels about 2 years ago when I first learned about it. They came in a few weeks.
I followed that up by ordering 25 of one of their boxes. Eight months later and nothing came so I emailed them asking what happened and they told me to just re-order. I re-ordered and I still never got them even though both times my order was processed and "shipped".
Don't order what you're not going to use.
All the things on this (http://shop.usps.com/cgi-bin/vsbv/postal_store_non_ssl/home.jsp?appName=SSOL) page are free except the things under eliminate a step. But really don't order it unless you're going to use it.

If you send something priority mail, you don't have to pay for the box/envelope?
Man, wish someone had told me that before ... I almost always just get my box as I'm in the checkout line when I'm sending something small via Priority, and they always say "Do you need to purchase the box/envelope, also?" when I check out, and I always say "Yes." Guess they've been getting that extra $1 from me for the last couple of years since I started using USPS Priority.
I ordered 50 each of those boxes online ... it said minimum order was 25, and I think 50 should last me for a good long time. Hard to find nice medium sized boxes half the time when you need em, too. Thanks for the link.

If the mailman see's you use them for any other reason, you could face Federal fines. The fines start at $5000 I believe

Normal Priority and express boxes are free at every post office. Some Post office lobbys have specialized boxes and tape and such that they do sell.
It is against the law to use these bozes for whatever you want after the item has been shipped. Either trash/recycle them, or re-use them, any other use is a Federal felony.
I'm not sure how flat rate works, but I think you pay a certain amount (hence flat rate) and they ship it. But then why would they have a flat rate program you can download to calculate how much it will cost to ship the box so you can then print the labels? I don't think you can use these for anything but flat rate, at least for shipping purposes. They even say its a violation of federal law if you use them for XXX shipping types.
Using Flat Rate Box for shipping will be cheaper, I'm shipping PSU that cost about $13 from CA to FL but using Flat Rate Box to ship about $7 :)

Flat rate is $3.25, for as much as you can get into that box. I use the boxes to sell stuff on eBay. $3.25 is also the lowest rate for shipping Priority Mail by weight. I think that the deal with flat rate is that it is for "mass" shipping, where the shipper buys and labels their own boxes, and gives them to the mail carrier or post office pre-stamped with flat rate (which can be bought online), but maybe if you go to the post office to buy a stamp there you have to pay by weight? Just my guess.

Isnt the post office run independently form taxes? I thought it made all its money off postage form envilopes and boxes. So you cannot claim it is using tax payers money for the bill of these. People pay for these things by the cost of shipping not through taxes.

Few things here.
1st off, excellent link ordered 25 of each box. Will be nice to have indeed.
2nd, what is the difference between Express mail and Priority? I normally use Priority.... Guess at worst I can just turn the box inside out and use it.
3rd, Yes, order buttloads of them. Next thing you know when you go to actually use 1 out of the thousands, the price will be tripled from what it was in the first place. It might not be the 'taxes', it might not even be the direct fees for shipping. But these boxes are paid for SOMEHOW.
4th, The link worked fine for me. Had to make 2 orders, order the boxes, then read more of the thread and found the tape and ordered it. BTW, look under the Personal use link from the 2nd link in the thread. Its there, just ordered it.

So when you recieve a box from someone and it's one of those priority ones, it's against the law to use it for storage or starting a fire? Stupid zero-tolerance laws, those boxes are CLEARLY made to be used to make space helmets...

Well I got mine today and it doesn't say anything specificly on the boxes that it could only be used for any type of survice. It looks like a standard USPS box. I assume you can use it for any of the services mentioned above (and the ones used in the terms of agreement), but I could be wrong. How are they to know?
I went through a box of 25 of these shipping out a couple of snowboards recently. The priority boxes are so great because you can connect them together so easily. One time I wrapped the boxes with very light colored paper and the post office guy could see that it was usps boxes. He joked around with me and told me how I could get into trouble for that. I shipped all 25 of em via parcel and didn't know there was anything wrong about it. He was cool about it and said to use darker paper next time. I am their #1 customer though :p
Wow, got these things fast. Impressive indeed.
Not sure if I saw it anywhere, but what is the cost of using a "flat rate" box anyways?

Last time I was at the US post office I got a stack of boxes from a postal worker. A roll of tape and a really big smile.
I was sending a good friend, an old modded TNT2. I got a laugh when I was asked if a box was fragile I told him yes, and shook it really hard (jingle jingle) and then banged it on the counter. I told him "fragile electroincs". Yes the video card still works BTW. The other box was over done on the stamping of fragile. Besides all the extra costs. That was my RMA for newegg.
You can just go to your local office and get the same thing as off the site. Since you are more than likey to go to the post office to mail the items, might as well restock there. I always get more than I need, if I ask for it or not. Sometimes I tell them please don't give me that much "I'll never use it". I always do.
My home route worker will bring me the same supplies too, from what he tells me. I got the coolest postman though.

The way I see it. Your given the boxes for free, with the agreement of using them for USPS use only. It lowers your shipping costs. Then you go against the agreement you chose to accept. How is that moral?
Using them for other uses isn't so bad like for cards, nick-nacks and such. No use of the product is offsetting a financial loss using it. But for any parcel postings that is were the morality/law is. Just my http://img177.exs.cx/img177/2024/twocents8df.gif

No, $3.85 is for flat rate priority mail. That $7.70 for 70 pounds is the non-flat-rate priority mail. The envelope size for the $3.85 is a little smaller than an ATX mobo.

So when you recieve a box from someone and it's one of those priority ones, it's against the law to use it for storage or starting a fire? Stupid zero-tolerance laws, those boxes are CLEARLY made to be used to make space helmets... No I don't think so, if that were so they would have it printed on the side of the box, it is not. After it is sent to you with something in it, it becomes your property, otherwise like I said, it would say something on it, like "property of usps, return to post office after use". The agreement on the site, is for the shipper, not the recipient.

I was really hoping that no one would ever post this becuase the whole free boxes thing is true, and it is a federal offence to be using them for anything else becides your priority mail. I ordered some when I had to sell some things on Ebay.
Now i'm afraid something is going to be done due to the abuse. However I do know they have plenty boxes, when I got mine a few months ago most of the stuff was made in 1996 (as it said on the boxes/stickers/etc.)
Your also going to kill your mailmen becuase they come in the standard little mail trucks and they have to haul them to your door. My friend got some when I did and they have a mail lady and his dad opened the door to see her dragging huge boxes to the door. She could bairly make it, they are very heavy.

1)This is now a sticky in the classifieds.
2)Do not abuse this. If you aren't going to use the boxes, don't but them. You aren't going to use 200 boxes of each kind. USPS doesn't make them for free, get what you'll use and get more when you need it.
I'm gonna order some now, I wonder what MY parents will say when I get them....

That's a mailman/woman's job, I don't feel sorry about it what so ever. So they need to get up out of there mail truck a couple times to do some real work oh well. Although I do agree with you on people abusing this by not using the boxes for proper use. Don't order these and build a tree fort out of them or something equally stupid Lol.
*Story* I had ordered every box made for my business and some of them were kept at the post office so I came down there. The guy was like "You have some boxes here, can you go in the back and get them for me?" then he changed his mind and brought them out himself.
He brings them out (2 boxes) and makes it sounds like he is carrying 500 pounds or something. Says careful it's extremely heavey, hands me both and I hold them with one hand Lmao. Those people need to get in shape and lay off the donuts, if you can't lift 15 pounds you got issues.

Yeah, no reason in wasting perfectly good boxes. I only ordered all of the boxes made because sometimes I have things that are awkard or weird shapes. So I figured I better get one of each which turned out to be a very wise move.

Yeah I mean don't get me wrong, I am thankful for the US postal system and everything! I've heard having a postal job is very stressful, but it can't be much worse then doing real physical labor if you ask me. They get paid pretty damn well too so stop whining about lifting 15 pounds *Cracks Whip* ;) :D

to those of you who keep saying not to abuse this, just stop whining. theyve been doing this for years. theres a large collection of people who actually use this service to harass people (the group will remain unnamed). someone just gets an address of someone who they deem deserving, post it, and a week later that person has an ass load of boxes at their door. they've been doing this for years and they still offer the service, so saying that ordering 2000 boxes is "abusing it" is just silly.

Makes you wonder why shipping rates are so high, the cost is passed to the tax payer and the client of the service as a whole. Why anyone would use this service for jokes is beyond me. Bieng a tax payer and someone who actually buys products from the USPs for legitimate uses, I will complain. It is far from whining, I am partialy paying for the "pranks".

Guys/Gals, I posted this mainly for use for the people who sell in the classifieds and ebay. Why must you abuse this in such an immature manner?
Indeed. People always seem to take advantage of anything thats free. Personaly, I would have ordered less than 25 if could have. I don't need that many (I ordered a few types) and I can always order more if I need them.
I hope one day you people get a better sense of whats right and wrong and what the consequences of your actions are. However, I dobut iyou will.

Mailing items is usually planned and is not a surprise. If you need a box or two, you can just get them right at the post office right before you mail it out anyways. I got a few from my local office. They offer the same services as online. Actually it is faster too.

Yeah, but the people who order thousands with no use for them are.
I gotta admit, it bothers me to see people order anything over 100. I know it's not going to be used. What a waste of trees... I hope you at least use them in your fire place instead of the garbage. You can't give them away now.
Maybe you can keep them and give them to your grandchildren. I'm sure you'll have 500 left for them to build a house with.
@md0Cer
09-14-05, 04:47 PM
Due to his reaction, I seriously don't think he expected to ACTUALLY get 1200 boxes for free. Usually if anything is free it is too good to be true, therefore people don't expect to really get anything out of it and just ordered a ton for kicks.
I remember back in the day of the free AMD merchandise there were quite a few people that were incredibly shocked after receiving a roll of sevral thousand AMD Athlon case stickers.
EDIT: Just ordered 25 of the square boxes. I really don't need 25, but it won't let me order any less. Oh well. :-/

I've ordered some myself but only a few styles, 25 each (one set each) as I don't go through them quickly enough. When I'm about to run out, I can always reorder more of specific style, shipping costs nothing but only a few days wait.
I could understand that someone needed 1,000 if that someone is a Powerseller on eBay but for us average Joe that sends out maybe 10 per week at the most, one thousand is just too much. Waste of space (where are you putting them all), waste of time, and if by chance you don't live to use it all, waste of post office's money.
you think sending 1000 boxes to a friend is funny? try sending a box of the max. quantity of everything you can order off of this site to your best friend: http://www.nichd.nih.gov/publications/pubskey.cfm?from=milk
about a month after ordering, i thought nothing was gonna happen, but a couple days later when i was over at his house (how ironic), fedex rolled up with 3 pretty big boxes that easily weighed atleast 30 to 40 pounds a peice... we took em over to the local grade school in a wagon (2 blocks away) and left em in the lobby
but anways, i order boxes regularly from the USPS site - i ship out alot of misc. things that i sell (paintball stuff, computer stuff, etc.)

I just keep my old boxed that stuff comes in to ship stuff out, and if I need a box I just go to the local post office and pick up one there. They gave me a bunch to try before and a few rolls of tape, and even told me about the free boxes online. Even though I've been selling a decent amount of stuff lately, I've found no need to stock up on them...
Great idea for the post office to people that'll use them for what they were designed for. To those that abuse, don't get upset when it costs more to ship stuff.

you people, how f***ing dumb can you be - I personally have great respect for the post office and their workers, yeah, I order lots of stuff from places like PETA and whatnot to get free stickers for the hell of it, but when you're screwing with the post office, that shows that you're pretty damn immature, especially when you think that the post office isn't going to deliver X number of boxes to you - its a god damn government service, and they have that service to BENIFIT PEOPLE, not to HUMOR YOU, so GROW THE F*** UP, and someone PLEASE just get rid of this thread, or post a disclaimer in the main post that states that YOU WILL RECIEVE ALL/ANY BOXES/ENVELOPES/STICKERS/FORMS THAT YOU ORDER FROM THE USPS ONLINE SUPPLIES ORDER FORM, SO PLEASE DO NOT ABUSE THIS SERVICE

no, I'm just fed up with how many immature people order 500+ boxes for s***s & giggles, mainly because I have a much greater respect for the post office than most of you people do, as my grandpa had been a postal worker for over 30 some years now, and he's showed me what they do and all that good stuff, and I appreciate what they do, and respect them for it
I know not everyone has this type of appreciation for the post office, but at least think twice about what you're doing before you order 500 boxes from them to amuse yourself
