The file is an .avi video zipped. It's from tom's hardware, he does tests on 4 computers: 1x P3 1 Ghz, 1x P4 2Ghz, 1x Athlon 1.4Ghz and 1 x 1.2Ghz Palomino.
What he did was to put his computer (with case off) in front of his monitor and show it running Q3, and take the heatsink/fan off the processor whilst running. He also measures the temperatures with a laser temperature guage thingy. On the p4, Q3 got slower and slower, and the cpu survives, and ran at 29 C. On the P3, Q3 got slower and slower and then Q3 froze up, and ran at 38 C, the cpu survived. On the 1.4 Ghz Athlon, Q3 froze after 3 seconds, popped up a windows error window , 2 seconds later the cpu started to give off smoke, the cpu and mobo died, it ran at 370 C !!!! The 1.2Ghz Palomino, Q3 slowed down, it then black screened after 2.5 seconds had passed, 2.5 seconds later the cpu started to give off smoke, the thermal diode died, along with the cpu. It ran at 298 C ! Well the download was worth it IMHO, as I would be tempted to try it myself, as I have gotten used to my K6/2 500 which is totally forgiving, and I'm gonna upgrade to a 1.4Ghz soon, and I probably woulda fried it before seeing the video ...

Yikes!!! That must've been what happened to my cpu when I started up my system sans heatsink, unknowingly...Feel bad that the intels survived but the athlons died :( AMD should really build in some sort of auto shutdown into it, like speedstep/PowerNow...

If you use the link to this article that is on the front of overclockers.com you wil find all the codecs as well.
But lets face it only fools would run any CPU without a heatsink, is it not obvious that they are not there for cosmetic reasons ?

I have thought about this and I have some questions.
does the P4 reduce its clock by front side bus or multiplier changes? perhaps the multiplier is not locked?
is this a move by intel to limit overclocking? if the PIII shuts down at 100°F then that might make oc'ing during the summer difficult with air cooling. also the P4 was at 86°F. That would prove very difficult with air cooling in the summer.
Do you think that 100°F is the limit of the silicon on the PIII or is the thermal cut out set low for other reasons?
yeah another pro intel article no doubt and I haven't even read it! who runs a computer without a heatsink even my P166 has a heatsink.
the temps are very interesting I wonder at what temp the smoke started coming out.
INTEL = GM with airbags to help cushion the impact of a fender bender & hopefully will not knock your teeth out.
AMD = FERRARI with no airbags & you'll probably die in it if you don't know how to drive the Itilian silk shredder.
It wouldn't be so bad to be in a FERRARI would it:cool:

Definitely not.... gimme the Ferrari anyday. It's been no secret that socket A AMD chips won't survive more than 5 or 6 seconds without a properly attached HSF. To me, this issue is only a worry for the uninformed/careless.....

can we rename this forum from AMD CPU to Ferrari CPU!!!! oh yeah

youll have to do it if youre changing the HSF

thanks Tomas for the link
haha..i actually saw that(smoke) on my friend's PC this yr when he decided to test it w/o a HSF.
