I have a Asus Geforce3, and the dinky little gold heatsink it comes with just isn't cutting it....
I was going to attach this:
http://www.coolermaster.com/products/cpucooler/fcpga/dp5-6h11.html because i have one lying around..
I would using Arctic Silver Adhesive....
Will this be too big? or heavy?
Will the Adhesive hold it under the heat?

Well you might lose a PCI slot....mighT!
But the thing I am worried about is weight. It may be to heavy and you never know, maybe one day ull here a big CLUNK, and then, ur monitor will go black....:(
Check out some of silversinksam's posts. He gives some good options for different Alpha Pal brand cooling mods that will probably save you a PCI slot and provide great cooling. The one you chose doesn't fit easily on most video cards, and they make specially designed heatsink upgrades for video cards now.

I did see silversinksam's posts, but that heatsink looks kinda small

It's the quality. A small cooler like those, even though small, would cool processors much better than say their retail heatsinks. They're small because they have to be. It's the good fan that makes up the difference.

Does anyone know what temps I will get with the Alpha PAL15U?
Right now, i have it clocked at 220, and my temps will go up to 56 on my core

If you use that Coolermaster heatsink you will lose several PCI slots, I have tried a similiar coolermaster hsf on my gpu, and while it was by far better than the stock hsf there are some great alternatives.
Regarding temps with the Alpha pal15u(figures my digitaldoc broke....again) But I'll put it in laymans terms, before the back of my video card was very hot to the touch, with the Alpha pal15u It is a luke warm tempature while running 3dmark2000 looped. ( I will run some tests with my handheld infrared scanner tomorrow)
The AOC low profile cooler is a good choice as well but not as good as the Alpha and the alpha is only 25mill in height including the 21.19cfm fan.....Its really a fantastic gpu cooler, but if your on a tight budget the AOC is better than any GPU specific hsf sold on the market.
Link to pics and details on both Low profile hsf's suitable for GPU use (http://forums.overclockers.ws/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=35853)

Also found and interesting Sanyo Denki Low profile cooler that was put on sale about 10 days ago, but one problem may be its 79x67.3x24 mill size.

The Alpha pal is 60x60x15(+10 fan) millimeters and is a perfect fit for most Geforce video cards.....
The AOC cooler is 64 x 63 x 15(+10 fan)

So it is better to go with the Alpha Pal 15U then?

Jack,
If you can afford to lay out $28 for the Alpha and want perhaps the best HSF for your video card then the answer is definitly yes.
The AOC for $15 is also a very good option.
Arctic Silver adhesive on the corners will hold it well and either regular thermal adhesive in the middle or do the job right and use Arctic Silver II in the middle.
Let me know how well you like the Alpha if you go that route, I guarantee you wont be disapointed. ;)

I think i will try it out...
I was just playing Quake3 for an hour, and my GPU Core temp was 60C...
So I just hope the Alpha one will bring it down quite a bit :)
It will be a little while before I get it, cause I still have to pay off my Geforce3 :)
And $28 American is kinda expensive :) (I am canadian BTW)
plus another $22(cnd) for the Adhesive, + $15(cnd) for teh Arctic Silver II
But I will let you know...
I have another question...SHoul i leave on the default gold ram heatsinks?

Jack what brand of GF3 do you have? some Claim that ramsinks are usefull and some claim the opposite, but some ramsinks like the Leadtek GF2 Ultra are pretty much useless:
http://www.leadtek.com/gf2ultra/gf2ultra-pic.jpg
These are just a solid piece of metal, if your gold ramsinks you have have fins and have decent surface area, I would simply remove them and apply arctic silver to it and reapply it. (many manufacturers only use a tiny 'smidget' of thermal interface material under thier heatsinks and ramsinks......I have tested several video cards in the last 6 months and not one had a decent amount of thermal material on them.

I have that on my MX; lapped, and higher output fan. Weights no problem in my system -- i evan have a fan grille fitted :) Mines connected with about 5 zip/cable ties.
Im not sure about all those small heatsinks -- even this thing gets warmer them my thermoengine on my cpu :(

Jack,
That Video card you have is definitly one of the best! (Im definitly going to buy either the card you have or Leadteks new GeForce3 TDH, but I will wait for the ATI to release the 7500 and 8500 so that a price war will surely drop the Gf3 prices to more reasonable levels)
But anyway back to your cards ramsinks, they are PERFECT!! and I noticed they have pushpin fasteners so you can just unclip them and remove the factory thermal grease and apply it correctly or upgrade it to Arctic Silver II

Alright, good to hear taht my ramsinks are perfect :)
But the Alpha cooler dosn't look any bigger then the my default cooler....
Are you sure it will cool better then it?..
That is teh reason i wanted to use the Coolermaster one i have

Jack,
While you are in limbo do this simple mod:
Get a 40x40x10(or 20) mill fan and slap it on top of your current heatsink, http://www.nexfan.com/images/l1a1kri.jpg
This one is $3.50 cents (http://www.nexfan.com/43/167.htm?64)
(get a few rubber washers so you have adequate clearance)use silicone glue or superglue to affix it, the Alpha pal15u is a low profile rackmount heatsinks and its dimensions are suitable so you dont lose a pci slot and the cooling properties are superb thanks to the Delta 21 Cfm Fan. If you dont mind losing a few pci slots slap in the Coolermaster. The AOC cooler I posted pics of will work nicely as well and it will blow away any blorbage any day, every day. The only card imho that benefits from blue orbs are ATI radeons as the Radeon chipset doesnt run as hot as a Nvidea chipset, and if you have a Voodoo 5, well thats a pretty damn hot chipset(s) and needs decent cooling. I am not a big fan of any Coolermaster hsf's as they are pretty generic, but thats mho.
http://www.ocshoot.com/ultra/hot/assy.jpg
I didnt come up witht he Alpha pal15u idea, but after reading this:
http://www.ocshoot.com/ultrahot.htm
I became a believer in this, I tried several options, Sanyo Denki Intel mods, coolermaster mods, Blue Orb mod, Alpha pal 6035 mod with and without 52 watt peltier.
If I just bought a Alpha pal 15u to start with I would have saved a lot of time and money.....my loss is your gain and I can only lead you to the light

I don't mind losing a PCI slot or two from the CoolerMaster, I just want the best cooling I can get :)

Jack I just spent an hour getting you numbers:
After 1 hour with my GF2 Ultra at 275/500 I produced a max temp of 37.5 c with Madonion looped with the temp probe on the back of the cards chipset. I'm tellin yah the Alpha Pal15u is by far the best GPU cooler on the market, albeit a rackmount IU heatsink
Ps at pc idle the temp on the back of the gpu is 34c
I broke out my old digitaldoc3 and swapped the Digitaldoc5 out.....gonna Rma that sucker tommorow.
PS You mentioned that the Asus factory heatsink isnt much bigger than the Alpha pal15u, True but as pinky mentioned the Alpha Pal is small and has a very powerful fan that has 21cfm and a low noise rating, the Asus factory fan probably has no more than 5 cfm. Also the Alpha Pal15u has hundreds of cooling pins that are cold forged with the copper baseplate.....matter of fact the coldplate and anodized aluminum pins are cold forged at precisly the same time, and the result yields not only a fantastic HSF, but a work of art( Im a retired engineer ignore me)

Wow, a temp of 37 is pretty good :)
I think I will go with the Alpha :)
Once I get enough money :)
