This is MaDnEsS :) I've been trying to find a way to overclock my pentium 3 1.0ghz for months. . I CAN'T DO IT ! I go into my BIOS and My processor settings seemed to inaccessable or locked, I have no idea what to do. I have an Alienware Computer, Pentium iii 1.0 GHZ, GeForce 2 Ultra, 384 Mb PC133 Ram, and an intel 810 series mobo "D815EEA". Is my processor overclockable ? Please help me out !!!!!!

p3 1ghz chips dont like to overclock much. a good overclock on this chip is getting anything over an extra 100 mhz.

there's always soft fsb. a program that you can use to up the fsb while in windows.

i really have no clue about the alienware company. the bios might be locked so you cant mess with it. dell and a lot of other pc manufacturers do this. they do it so people don't accidentally mess something up. its a good precaution for people who aren't computer geeks.

im assuming your p3 is the 133 fsb type. if you have generic pc133 memory it wont go much higher than this either.

is this your pc.

its the same case as mine. the antec sw1030b. some company makes this case for about 10 different companies. kind of funny that they are selling a fileserver case for a gaming machine.

looks like your best bet is softfsb. i think shadow has it on his ftp site.

Shane The biggest prob you have is the fact that your motherboard is Intel. The answer to your question is: not on that motherboard. The 1.0 gig PIII is pretty much played out and you would never see the increase you might eek out if you changed to another board. Sorry for the bad news. :( That is a rightous puter you've got. Don't hurt it.:)

The motherboard is the main barricade to overclocking your system. OEM companies and Intel don't want us to overclock.

Some of those 1 gig CPUs, especially the cD0 stepping are good overclockers. Reports of reaching 1.1 to 1.2 gig are quite common.

Alienware pc's are pretty expensive.
You can replace the motherboard with a abit vh6-2 for about 85.00 that will let you overclock.

Open the case and look at the motherboard. The PLL-IC is a rectangular chip about an inch long. Right next to it will be a shiny somewhat oval shaped part. When you find these two pieces together you've found the PLL chip. look on the larger chip and take down the manufacturer and part #. Look for this chip in Soft FSB. If you find it listed you might be able to overclock, but just finding the correct PLL listed does not guarantee success - the software written to access the PLL is somewhat dependant on other parts of the motherboard. Assuming you do find the chip listed in Soft Fsb, and assuming your cpu is an EB chip - meaning it's designed for a 133FSB bus, go ahead and see if Soft Fsb displays the correct default FSB - being either 100 or 133. If it does then try bumping the slider up a notch and try applying that. It will either not work at all, or it will appear to have worked. To verify that it really has worked, get Cpu ID from HOda and run it. You can try this, but to be honest the 1GHz chip is already pretty much at its limit. You'd be lucky to get another 20 to 40MHz out of it with standard cooling.

Phil, another senior member, once said that he has got SoftFSB to work by just plugging in clock generator settings by trial and error when his was not listed. Supposedly, he got one of them to work using that random method.

The real issue is that the motherboard is the heart and soul of a computer system. If you plan on overclocking, choose the motherboard wisely. I know many of you are stuck with what you got. But, a motherboard is not all that expensive, especially if you find a good used bargain. For example, I have an extra Abit SE6 right now that I'd like to get rid of.

Anyone who upgrades often (like me) is bound to have extra good components laying around not being used. Probably can't go wrong with Abit or Asus motherboards if you plan to overclock. Of course there are plenty of other good mobo brands out there too, I just haven't had much experience with them. Why not look at the Classified Ads section of this website?
