Sup guys. Figured I'd come to you on this one, I've been working all night and can't seem to figure it out. Here's the deal:

I got my Chaintech 6600GT AGP today and installed it. No problems there, but then I went and grabbed a new power supply because the old one was only a 250W. I picked up an Antec 400W and installed it. I made sure that I plugged all the cables into the corresponding places where they were connected on the old power supply (assuming that the two cables that could connect to the floppy drive function the same and it doesn't matter which you use).

The computer loads up fine, but as soon as I get in game or even while running 3dMark the computer crashes. I don't know what's going wrong. I have the 9/30/2004 version of the drivers currently installed.

Additionally, I used the cable that came with the card, plugged the male end into where the the power supply cable that was supposed to go into the hard drive. Then I took the two female connectors on the other end, plugged one into the 6600GT and the other into the hard drive.

Can anyone help me out here? It's really frustrating that I can't figure this one out. I think I've tried almost everything, maybe you guys have some ideas.

Thanks,
Ben

crashing as in just rebooting on it's own? Or something else....figure full bore that 6600gt is going to use about 200watts or half of ur power supply....try putting it on it's own power dongle....

Let me clarify:

The game freezes is what I mean by the computer crashes. This especially occurs (as in every time) when I touch the graphical settings of the game. Happened in both WoW and Doom 3. I'm going to try giving it it's own power cable right now and see how that works, although I think I've done it already and that's likely not the problem. Thanks for the help so far, anyone else have ideas?

Have u tried any other driver besides those u have installed? Also What temps are u seeing? It's possible that it's getting to hot.

OK, I changed the driver out and things seem to be working a bit better. I'm still having a few crashes, so my guess is the driver change was merely coincidence.

My card seems to be really hot. How do I measure the temperature it's running at? What temperature should it be running at? And finally, would having my network card directly under the card (AGP slot) effect the cooling at all? Thanks again guys for gradually helping me to figure this out.

well most cards that have a thermo in the card have their temps in the driver settings. right click desktop, properties -> settings -> advanced, then click on the vid card tab and u will see the stuff pop out on the left.

But i don tknow if your card will have one, my evga 6600gt doesnt have one.. i know most BFG's dont but i kno that XFX's have

as for your network card being directly under the vid card.. idk if that will make that much of a difference, all its doing is pretty much blocking some of the air flow from the card fan . i try to put everything as far away from my card tho >.> idk if it really makes a difference.

Maybe its your new psu, when i had my antec 430 it keept crashing whenever i ran games for like 10 min with my new card. so i bought a new 530 fortron and it works fine now.
With my new hs and fans

I think the problem is mostly gone now. I moved my network card to the bottom slot, 3 slots away from the graphics card with nothing in between. The fan on the card is working really well now and I got 3dmark to run through without crashing. Let me know if I'm wrong on this and I only just managed to get lucky and my fix is just short term. Thanks to everyone that's helped so far.

What was happening was probably caused by heat and by moving the NIC down you created better airflow for the card to breathe. Let us know how things turn out.

I am having similar problems, I am using a Asus66ooGT in a Shuttle Barebone.. I drilled some holes, so the card can get air from the outside. Some games just keep crashing after a while. I will format and install everything again after I finished the vdimm mod. Some games still detect my Gf3, which might cause problems. I t also crashes with no case at all. The card gets quite hot too, bout 70°C under load :/ the cooling of that card ain't really brilliant :/
