First vote!
EDIT: Tried overclocking my Viao 520x or something like that. It was a 2.0Ghz P4, and ran hot at idle just running file sharing. I should have known better. It fried...

Yeah, heat is definitely a significant reason for me not oc'ing.

See, now I know. First of all, I would've never bought that model in the first place. It ran SO hot, stock @ idle. I didn't really know about all the stuff I do know. Needless to say, FSB o/c'ing utility + sony vaio = smoke comming from under your bed (where your laptop is laying running file sharing (dial up :D)) = parents being pissed that something's on fire in your room = getting kicked out of the house = being a bum for ever = dying without purpose in life = no one will ever remember you = going to hell (obviously).
The moral of the story is...DON'T OVERCLOCK VAIO's!!!
-Sam
I have no need to + heat.
don forget your make and model and at this momment I am attempting to oc mine but no progress at the moment so I'm holding my vote untill i can figure out my pll chip.

overclocking a laptop has never seemed like a good idea in my mind. combine the lack of decent cooling (those things get hotter than hell even at stock clocks) with the difficulty and hassle of replacing parts or repairing, then throw in the fact that you can't just void warranty on a processor or something (if you do it you'll be voiding warranty on the entire machine), and you've got a problem with overclocking.
however, if some people have tried it and it works, then that's their deal. besides, real men don't use laptops :P
Never tried to OC a Laptop, and I dont' think it would be a good idea at all. ATM I'm configuring my friends Averatec 6200 series w/Amd-M XP 2400+, and it gets hot already by just working at its full speed. Don't know how my ABS Mayhem G2 would do, didn't get it yet. Reviews say they're quiet? Anywho, bad idea to overclock a laptop IMO ;)

Ahhh, great idea.. Immagine being @ Starbucks drinking coffee w/that huge desktop on your table. :D Altough you're right, you'd get lots of attention.... :p

12.5% overclock. Works just fine as long as the HDD doesn't overheat.

i got to 115 fsb by 12x so 15x12 = 180 mhz oc. im sure if i could change the ram's divisor settings (runs ram at 133 and 100 fsb, and 153 ram at 115 fsb, so if i oculd run the ram sync with fsb i could prolly get the fsb up there a little more. btw this is undervolting the CPU at 1.275 Vs and 1.45 stock, so im sure this nobile duron will do more. when i oc it helps playin CS alot, im guessin the higher bus speeds and faster ram helps video. and i always stick a copper chipset cooler on the bottom of the alu HS plate for the chipset when oc'd, have power running from a usb plug, the fna spins slow but its spinning, better than the passive HS normally. (i chopped up the plastic so i can stick thaton there, not much to lose, my lappy has been through hell and the casing is cracked in many places, whats another spot in the casing gonnado? lol
BTW it is a compaq evo N115 (aka presario 700) with mobile duron 1200 128 megs ram (usin 32for video) via KM 133 chipset

I Oced my sis's 1.5m to 1.7Ghz, pretty sucessful. The chip ran pretty cool (35C idle, 45C Load) and it runs 37C Idle and 48C Load) The temps rose 3C over 200mhz, not bad IMO :D.

I use a program called ClockGen. It is chipset specific so make sure you download the right one. Go here (http://www.cpuid.com/clockgen.php)
im looking at 70C load. Maybe underclocking...but i dare not OC this thing.

Have you put any thermal compund on the CPU? You can just like a desktop.
replacing that evil factory pad with a sheet of copper and some as5will dramatically increase cooling results. feel the back of your lappy when the fan is on... If you don't feel hot air then the cooling sucks.
my lappy puts out slightly warm air and bounces all around 35-60c (fan turning on and off)... some bios out there are configured not to initialize cooling fans till the temp gets above 70c... with the intel chip (presshot) the thermal throttling starts kicking in at like 60c so you need a third party fan controlling program to keep your fans on so your chip performs as it should... get throttle watch (it was on the main page about a week ago) and see. If you can't overclock it... you might as well get the performance out of it that you deserve.

i got my 1.6ghz to 1.7ghz, its a 754 pin athlonxp-m 24hrs, prime stable, and maxed out at 1.8ghz, and it was 225 fbs.
I tried overclocking my Dell i8600 but it's only downwards unlocked......... and I don't feel like messing around with the fsb soooo. It's fine where it is. I'd rather have it working than fried anyday.
My notebook already gets hot enough and I do not want to void my warrenty, so no, I havnt tried to overclock my notebook and nor do I plan too.
My Presario 2100 runs 63-72°C folding. So I am not interested in overclocking' it, but if I could get it to run at a faster FSB and drop the multi, that would help performance. I would also like to learn to edit the bios so I could get a lower max vcore than 1.45v. Example: after priming, I find that I can run the full 2GHz at only 1.35v and it is stable. Edit the bios for 1.35v max, and bam! cooler running laptop. Anyone have any experience either of these???

All those planning to OC HP laptops with older XPM Chips i.e < 1.8GHz please redo the cooling. My HP (ze4600us) sucked when it came to OC'ing, simply because it would get really hot (>70 C!!).
HP's have poor cooling and you can feel the hot air through the single vent discomfort you quite a bit. It would lock-up when I gamed becase the temps were too high.
Specs:
HP Pavilion ze4600us
CPU: AMD XPM 1.8GHz
Graphics: ATi IGP320M (sucked!)
Cooling: 1 fan, 1 vent
BIOS OC options : Almost nill, tried using clockgen but failed. These guys use propritary MoBo's like Dell.
My o/c went well. I have a thread here about it. A s754 A64 3000+ from 1.8GHz clocked to 2.2GHz max. Not bad considering it only has pc-2700 in it.

Update: found out the most stable setting for the dv1000 is 1939.7mhz(114.10fsb). The CPU was prime stable @2100mhz but the onboard sound and started crapping out. So for any peeps out their with the dv1000, 114.10 fsb is the max fsb setting I would OC to.
I think my laptop can hardly handle the heat at stock speeds.. I don't even want to try ocing.
I would love to, but can't find any software that will let me do it.
If anyone else is running an IBM T20/22, let me know what program you're using.
After removing the pad,I have gotten temps down to a decent level, and would enjoy playing around.
However, I did replace the 700MHz with a 1.0GHz CPU. Runs just fine.

My laptop is a Celeron 500. I wouldn't imagine that I could OC very high, or even notice a difference.
RideGuy
I managed to OC my Gateway laptop with CPUMSR, but unfortunatly beacuse of some kind of evil lock the CPU speed dosen't change. Aparently messing with my multiplier just causes the system to tweak the FSB to keep me at 2.8GHz. I get a tad bit more memory bandwidth when I OC the RAM, but nothing enough to notice. Though it is cool watching it's PC2700 exceeding 200MHz :D

Haven't tried, but if there was a good program out their that would do dell inspiron series, I would love to try it when the warranty is out.
^^^^^ if you have an inspirin 8600 that came with an A06 bios don't have any expectations.... I tore my laptop apart to get my pll and found out that my pll version dosen't have the ability to change the fsb through software which means the only way to oc the thing is with hardware mods but I have metasearched the internet many times with no results for hardware modifications... I talked to a dell technicitian and he said that I could take my laptop apart and it won't void the warranty...

I have been using SetFSB to overclock my A75-S211. I can only manage 3.42 stable with the FSB at 142.5
Any suggestions on how to get 3.6 and also is there any temp monitoring software compatible with the A75? I've tried MBM but its not supported.
my 3DMark01 on score with Omega drivers and IGP core at 326mhz is 5179.
Yeah I guess I might as well post it. I used SETFSB and got my Dell i8600 Dothan 1.6 up to 1.92 prime and 3D mark stable. Superpi of 40 sec...........not too bad.

i used the same SETFSB program found here:
http://www13.plala.or.jp/setfsb/
with the Intel855PM - ICH4M version for the IBM Thinkpad X31 on my DELL 600m and it worked fine (according to CPU-Z 126, my mobo version is the Intel855PM - ICH4M
i haven't tried any of the other SETFSB versions...
i tried my 2ghz dothan at 2.2ghz and didn't have any problems, and it wasn't noticeably hotter...but i was wondering if the hard drive would like the o/c'd pci bus of 36mhz?
i see you're running your 1.6ghz at 1.93...which means your pci bus is around 39mhz, right?
have you had any problems with that? what model hard drive do you have?
i guess there's no PCI/AGP lock on the dell's using SETFSB?
has anyone had any bad / good experience with laptop hard drives and high pci bus?

That's a really good question. I remember that my old PIII-S desktop system didn't like a PCI bus much above 39 MHz, IIRC. 1266 overclocked to roughly 1425 MHz, so bus would be (1425/1266.67)*(33.33) = 37.5 MHz. I think the highest quasi-stable overclock was 155 MHz, so a PCI bus speed of 38.75 MHz. That was a fairly robust desktop system, and so I can't imagine that laptop PCI chipsets and hard drives like speeds tooo much higher than that ... (But then again, I'd love to hear otherwise!!!!) -- Paul

well, i found out that my sound doesn't work when the fsb is around 115mhz or higher...in addition the machine doesn't wake up properly after hibernation at this fsb...
the cpu seems prime95 stable at 115mhz (2.3ghz) for hours...
i have now tried 110mhz fsb (2.2ghz) and the sound works fine now...and the computer wakes up properly after hibernation now too...but when it wakes up, it resets the fsb back to 100mhz...strange
oh well, 2.2ghz is pretty sweet....gets me 37s in superpi 1m...still about as fast as a p4 3.8ghz machine
Great OC Dustybyrd,hope my 1.6ghz i6000 would do 1.8ghz
my i6000 will be here next week.cann't wait
u guys know/heard any problem w/ this model ?
since it is a new model iam taking my chance here.

I kicked up my tecra M2 (dothan core @ 1.6ghz) a notch or two. Its a folding around 60* C on my lap. here's the cpuid at 1878. I wish i could hit up the multi and not pimp the fsb so much. Im sure after running video benchies im gonna have to back it down. but for now everything is working so im keeping my fingers crossed.
My big laptop is a Asus L5800ga with the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro128mb Mobility, 3ghz northwood, 2 x 512 ram..... I have a button on it for the speed stepping, the top 2 speeds are a car and airplane.... but there is a "rocket mode" and I can't figure out how to enable it. Built in OC from the factory, I have searched and haven't come up with anything. But also, heat is always a consideration, 55C minimum (on A/C power) no matter what load. The laptop was purchased from a friends computer shop and Arctic Silver was used on the CPU when it was installed, this was a barebones to begin with. Anybody ever hear of "Rocket Mode"? It IS mentioned in the manual, but nothing about enabling it .

i got a antec laptop cooler for my desk at work, and now i run the 2ghz machine at 2.2ghz all the time....(no speedstep)...while it's on this cooler...
it will do 2.3+ghz no problem...except the sound doesn't work at that fsb...i thought about getting a pci sound card...but i have only seen the expensive audigy ($90 min)...for sure not worth it, unless i need top notch sound, which i don't on this laptop...
also, when not at work, i use the system sans A/C adaptor, and then i set the machine to run at 6x110 or 660mhz all the time...for more battery life...but, interestingly, i don't actually notice much of a speed difference...
but...i just can't help myself...i have to o/c when the temps are under control :D and battery life is not an issue

Nice o/c. Too bad about sound limiting your efforts :/ Your right though, @ 660 the dothan still flies, stingy on battery and still delivers enough power to do many tasks.

You couldn't pay me to attempt this... is fried board/cpus from overclocking covered in the dell warranty ?
i only overclock when the laptop is on the antec laptop cooler (with two 70mm fans)...and the temps are lower with that cooler and overclocked to 2.2ghz, than without the cooler and at stock 2ghz...the hard drive temp drops by 6-8C and the cpu temps are now 2-3C cooler, while overclocked
so, cooling shouldn't be a problem...
when it's not on the laptop cooler, i actually underclock to 660mhz, for more battery life...
Took my Asus C90S with a e6600 @ 2.4 in it all the way to 3.3 :]
