That's the toughest question in the world and I have seen it asked a 1000 times. I have been gaming regularly for 20 years and have had alot of favorites. I would say that resently Max Payne has really caught my attention. After I was finished I was not only tired physically but I was emotionally drained. Never has a game caused me to become so mentally involved. It was like being in a movie or reliving someones life in a 3rd person perspective of course but the game was a bit short. For me the best game award would go to a game that was the funnest since game should = fun then I would have to say the best game would be one that I had the most fun playing. This award goes to a game that I have logged the most hours of Lan game deathmatch, Online gameplay, Singleplayer gameplay, Map creation, Skin creation, and just never gets dull with the endless list of mods and updates......HALF-LIFE...

Buncha darn kids here. "ooh, I love those new flashy games that are all about graphics! " Lemmie tell you something! Back in the day, before 3D accelerators, we didn't HAVE flashy graphics! We had 8-bit graphics, and WE LOVED THEM! We were glad we had them!

Me, I gotta go with X-COM: UFO Defense and X-COM: Terror From The Deep. Both have AWESOME gameplay, and their graphics are perfect! Sure, not all flashy and 3D accelerated, and I even think they're 320X240, but it's some great stuff. These are the ONLY games where I sat down to play in the evening, and quit playing when the sun came up. Some DARN fine games!

Baldurs Gate 2! - The most involving game and the best story ever in a computer game (since 3d monster maze on my ZX81).

The most addicting game I ever played was a text-based basketball simulator by Lance Haffner Games called Basketball: The Pro Game. It ran on my old 386 with DOS 5.0 and I was thoroughly addicted for over 3 years...day and night.

As far as current games go...I'd have to say it's the Day of Defeat mod for Half-Life. I play it religiously at least a couple hours a day which makes up most all of my free time for anything.

I do enjoy several others that most have mentioned...most being 1st person shooters like UT, Deus EX, the new Wolfenstein MP demo is promising, Serious Sam, DF (I, II, LW), etc. NBA Live! series and Madden have been all-time faves too...

Dues Ex is one of the best games i ever played. The multiplayer rocks too. Too bad the multiplayer never cought on though. I mean, it's been at least a month, but when I would play, games were limited to 12 players, and there was never more than 50 people playing! Total! The other drawback was it ran a little slow compared to some games, but the graphics were nice along with the story, and of course the augs and skill upgrades. If the game was more popular, there would of been a lot more multiplayer updates and the game would beat the living stuffing out of counterstrike.

Thelemac and I have our dorm room geeked out with a Nintendo, Sega, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64 and half a dozen computers, so I really have a lot to choose from.. But lately I've noticed we've been playing a lot of Zelda, Zelda a Link to the Past, and Megaman! :) Although, I'm also a big fan of Asheron's Call.

All time favorite game though has got to be MegaMan III. But its a tough choice.

Starcraft/Broodwar -- I was one of the best, seriously. I was invited to go to Korea but i turned it down (school)

Final Fantasy3 -- To date, this is the best RPG i have ever played, and probably always will be. It is PERFECT!

Might and Magic: Clouds of Xeen -- Great game, and my first PC game ever. I got Darkside of Xeen and beat it as well as the world of xeen. No game will have a place in my heart like Clouds of Xeen. It came on 8 1.44 MB disks. I thought it was huge!

I have Diablo2. I am disgusted you guys think this item-hunt game is fun. Blizzard totally ****ed me off with these ****-poor CPU intensive crap graphics and totally whacked gameplay.

Just my $.02

Gotta be Half-life for best FPS
Baldurs Gate series for RPG
X-com UFO Defense for Strategy
and any of Sierra's original "Quest" games for adventure i.e. King's Quest, Police Quest, and Heroe's er Quest for Glory.

One of the best i've ever played was called "Out Of This World " it was also available on bbses( remember those ?) as PKworld. It was devilishly hard and lightyears ahead of its competition its sequel was flashback.

I also like:

doom2
halflife and mods
System Shock 2 (best first person shooter story )
Total Annhilation
dune2
Fallout series ( currently playing tactics )

All time favorite game though has got to be MegaMan III. But its a tough choice.

Mithian

YES!

Mega Man 3 for nintendo was like one of my first nintendo games. It rocked, I can still beat it easily.

Beat topman, use top spin and beat shadowman, use that to beat Magnet man, use that to beat hard man.

Then beat snake man and use that on gemini man, use that on needle man, then use that on electric man.

The 4 corner bosses are a bit tougher, but nothing too bad. After that, it is a peice of cake imo! last guy sucks!

You mean Final Fantasy 6.

i think he means DAGGERFALL, the best roleplaying game to date. Yes it has those wonderful ;) graphics, but in terms of sheer freedom to do as you choose in a large game world, nothing matches it.

That and I always loved duke nukem 3d. I even enjoyed the one that came on the disk with it, duke nukum. A nice side scroller of old school style. Speaking of Duke, who can forget his Chinese cousin Lo Wang. Shadow warrior had good crass lines and killer rabbits. I need to reinstall that one.

Starcraft helped me graduate with a C+ average. Of course before it came I had 3.5 semester and one semester of 4.0.

It has been awhile since my C128(usually 64 mode) was hooked up. But this discussion of old games/great games has got me to thinking about hooking it up again. Aside from monitors(only have 1) I probably have the equipment to get 2 or 3 systems up and running down here in the basement. I am tempted to set it up and play Kung Fu Master or Bruce Lee or Dig Dug or some of the other games I can't remember. If only I could remember the commands.

From the old to the new, I managed to get an x-box and have played a little Halo tonight. It has real potential to be on this list. At first I was a little nervous and thought maybe I should have gone with NFL fever. But after I got the controls down, it has turned out to be fun.

So for a list of my favorite games.
Daggerfall
Duke Nukem 3D/Shadow Warrior
Adventure Construction Set for the C64(This would be a great idea for today. With modern Graphics.)
StarCraft
Zelda 2 for the NES(used to play this alot on an emulator too)
Earthworm Jim for Genesis
I honestly liked Tom Landry Football as a generic football game.
Baseball for the NES(whatever the original game was with the poor fielding third baseman.)

I have enjoyed alot of games, but these are the ones that leap to mind. But my favorite game of all time remains Daggerfall.

For me it would have to be Spy vs. Spy ( The one in the antartica ) for the Commodore 64, I've never had so much fun playing a game. I played it so much the tape broke,
I never have found another copy.... (sob sob):(
The strange thing is just how much better the older games are, I mean games are supposed to be different to reality (so we can escape it!) however games seem to be getting to much like real life and this takes the interest out of them.
The only game I have found recently was American MacGee's Alice but I can't afford to buy it! :(

At the Wal-mart I work at Alice is now down to 19.96 or so. I don't know what the price is elsewhere, but you should be able to find it for something close to this price.

And yes games are too cookie cutter, follow-the-trend now adays. I yearn for creative/different game types. Think of how nice a good side scroller would look on today's systems. I would like to see something like Duke Nukum, but with modern graphics. You could even use a 3d engine. I am just picturing what could be done with the computers of today. And another problem is games are too scripted. Which is why I like daggerfall, it gives you freedom to do what you want in a game world.

Street Fighter 2!! I must've spent more than a thousand dollars worth of quarters playing it at the arcade, and then when it came out on Super Nintendo I was the first kid to get it.

My favorite computer game would probably be Age of Empires 2. There's supposed to be a sequel to it coming out next year. Before I built my new computer, the best game I could play on my P1 was Caesar 3. That was pretty addictive.

Counter-Strike: Probably the best fps EVER.
2 things wrong with that
1. cs isnt a game, its a mod for half life which is the actual game :p
2. S&I is better :p

hmm now fav games. i would say my fav now is Stronghold.

and the following list are the games that have consumed the most of my life (aka favs)

Age of empires (all)
Half-Life (S&I)
Quake series
Doom Series
Starcraft and broodwar
Lords of the realm 2
C&C series

and the 2 games that i owe most of my life to are *drum roll*
Asteroids and Scorched Earth!!!!

Scorched Earth being #1 hehe. that game has consumed 6 years of my life, lol. (age 12-18 :p) and it still consumes my boredom time.

system shock 2
(liked 1, but. . .)
thief 1&2

sure i loved max payne, but i didnt play it nearly as much as i played the above games. i think half-life is overrated. i liked it, but i just didnt like it as much as others. i played counterstrike a couple times and then that was it. i love UT. i played ut almost as much as play my favorites. Q3, not as much fun as i had hoped.
one game maybe only i liked was hardwar (not mispelled). nobody seems to have heard of it before though.

Tribes2 Is The Best
Online, multiplayer 1st person shooters are the best, Quake 3 arena is kind of like this but Tribes 2 is much more advanced. It supports stuff like client side scripting, server side modding very easily. I can't get enough of the game, during summer all I did was play that game. For recent games:

FPS:Max Payne is some good, Operation Flashpoint single player, Half-life and all of its mods (CS for MP).

RPG: I have to go with either Alice or Baldurs Gate.

BUT there are emulators for NES, gameboy,SNES, Genesis and NEO-GEO that have hundreds if not thousands of games. With MAME for old arcade games too, the sheer variety of games available is mind boggling. I'm just now finishing up Final Fantasy 5 and for sheer time spent playing they would have to rank up there as my favs of all time. For strategy I would have to go with Master of Monsters for the genesis. My wife and I would spend weekends playing this game (any game that you like and a woman likes is a keeper).

Rogue Squadron. I put in lots of hours on that one. Shooting down Tie fighters and blasting AT-ATs ranks up there as one of the best gaming experiences ever.

Best Ever?
Old-a$$ Microprose games from late 80's/early 90's(when Sid was still there):
original Gunship
M1 Tank Platoon 1
F19/F-177 Stealth Fighter.

All ultra-realistic Sims, which to run their real-time physics engines (for M1 tank at least) on 286's back in the day were programmed in assembly language!
Not to mention the 250+page manuals that come with the latter two that described not only gameplay but military theory, and had tons of pages on weapons systems. Have not seen anything comparable EVER!
I do not play sims anymore though because nowadays they seem to be about graphics and not realism...too bad Micropose got bought by M$ :)

I think my favorite game of all time has to be Duke Nukem 1. The side scroller. I just freaking loved that game. Would play til my mom would make me get off (was about 3-4 at the time.)

Anyone remember Xargon? Loved that one too.

Here's my favorites chronologically:

1) Jumpman
2) Street Fighter 2
3) Goldeneye

Its tough to say between SF2 and Goldeneye, which one is my all-time favorite, but I would probably say SF2.

those Half-Life series really soaked me into the game. I love how HL designed their single player missions. Now everyone copies it! :D

Gotta love No One Lives Forever's cartoony yet realistic single player mode.. along with Medal of Honor's war-like battle sequences. Max Payne won me over with the fantastic bullet-time feature.
Starcraft will always be a classic. Diablo is losing its touch...

Zelda 1 was the first non-liniar game I ever played and will always be "the best" for me.

Mario is a close second since it is the first game with really cool graphics and really cool dynamics that made the levels seem interesting an unique as aposed to the Atari style: the next level is the same only harder/faster.

I'll bet if there was no NES system, nintendo wouldn't even be around today.

I absolutely cain't believe that so few people even mentioned BF:1942. I counted 4, and only 2 actually voted for them. I think this is the greatest game I've ever played. I'm not an avid gamer, but it's certainly very good. I don't like UT and CS, but just because they seem so fake (monsters and what not). I've not played Deus Ex or Max Payne, but they look pretty good. Guess I should hold off on judgement of good games until I've played them all, but I still think BF:1942 is great. Too bad my video card is craptastic and I don't have enough RAM . . . Hell, if I had more and better, it might actually be playable . . .:D

Hey Fightingpiper, my best buddies Dad is the holder of the world record score for Galaga. you can look him up in the Guiness Book.

He had the score and level glitch because it got so high.

IE it went from one side and then it started over and kept overlapping itself.

Now my favorite games?

Old adventure games that had to depend on gameplay, humor, storyline to make it a good game.

I liked the Quest for Glory series, the Leisure Suit Larry series (hilarious).

Lately, I've been really into horror based FPS so my vote goes to Aliens Vs Predator 2. I can't wait till they make the third game based on the Doom 3 or Unreal 2 engine!

MoO (the first one)
Dark Sun: Shattered Land
Battlezone (activision one a few years ago)

Homeworld 2 is coming out some time this year as well. I wish they would make a homeworld type game where you could explore a whole bunch of systems like in Star Control 2. That would be so cool.

And every game sience i play for a day or so , compair it to it and just throw it in the corner of room where it is to never be touchd again for many many years lol...

That game you have to either Like it or you dont. There really isnt a "i play it once in awhile". Im just happy they released it period :)

Zelda 1
Zelda 3
Zelda 4
Zelda 5
Zelda 6

[non of the new age zelda on gameboy advanced BS i got a gameboy LONG TIME AGO just so i could play zelda 4]

cant forget the game
Secrets of Evermore, MAN i spent so many freakn hours when i got home from school playn that game. I actually started playn it again today on the pc with a emulator. I own the game so its legal :), but i dont feal like drag'n all that crap out to play so i put it on the pc PLUS i can save enywhere i want "wink wink".

uhh
All mario games i hate to say it i love :) they are pretty freakn fun. All the way up to mario 64 enyway havent playd eny others besides mario 3 [nes] when me and my buds come over to my place we play it on the pc lol. All this high power tech to run NES games lol.

Final Fantasy 4 and 7. To me FF7 was the greatest FF ever to be made , all the new ones to me are junk.

UniRally - me and my bro when yougner playd this way to much , its a unicycle racen game for snes where u do stunts and crap lol.

Doom for the Snes was freakn awsome.

02-21-03, 03:20 PM
these games brought out feelings of euphoria for me.

final fantasy (the first one for nintendo) i was playing this game 8 hours a day! i had ZERO worries about my life.

final fantasy 2 (snes) this was probably one of the greatest games for snes., oh the story line, oh the mode seven effects when you flew the flying ships, (forgot what they were called, lol). can't belive the bad guy was your father...lol. i wish i was 12 again.

super mario kart for snes. multiplayer play was the best! saturday nights were spent trying to shoot luigi with the green shells to show off my skills. only sissies used the homing red shells! wish i was 12 again.

grand theft auto 3 & vice city (for ps2) i toked up, stole a car and was driving it recklessly, couldn
t stop laughing after i first saw the car's doors fly open from the damage they recieved.

Dune II the building of a dynasty. great game. wish it was multiplayer.

c&c the original. great game to play against your next door neighbor over the modem.

the first DOOM! especially multiplayer. i remember getting so excited i started having heart palpulations because i got to be part of a 4 player coopertative play in doom. i wish i was 14 years old again....

half life (the original), after years of post doom, and crappy quake, comes the mother of all pc games. what a great and funny story line! addictive....

then came counter strike. hilarious! the greatest online player action game i have played. RUSHRAPEREPEAT!!!

homeworld, GREAT trance-like space RTS game!

master of orion, both 1 & 2. i just couldn't stand when the council voted to select a cpu as king. kill em all! oh, in MOOII, i was at the alien leader's planet, bombarding it when my 486 decided to crash, lol. could not reach that planet again.

other great games that i recalled.
privateer the original (pc)
dragon warrior (nes)
double dragon (nes)

i would just like to add, that game makers are not making them like they used to. trying to fool us with all this eye candy is making me sick. where is the innovative creations? where is the promised AI with our new, powerfull machines? i feel that here is about ONE game that comes out every 4 years that is fantastic to play. when i was younger, i recall numerous games that had to be played. maybe this due to the fact that i am getting older, but somehow i doubt that.

i forgot to mention STREET FIGHTER II for snes. RULED!!
