I have a virus/malware/?? that is placing cookies on my computer. Norton Antivirus, Ad-Aware, and SpyHunter (all up to date)do not detect anything except these cookies. How can I find what out is placing these cookies?
I am running Windows XP. I am using Mozilla Firefox as my internet browser on a cable connection.
Thanks,
Ryan

Try setting up the internet options to only allow cookies from certain sites...Other than that, I don't know....

Try Microsoft's Anti-Spyware program and see how that works for you .

What cookies exactly? I think there's less to this than appears.

Your websurfing is placing cookies. Cookies are information that is stored from websites. (login information for example). You also get cookies from ads you see (including this site), all they track is what ads you've seen so you don't keep getting duplicate ads. They aren't harmful at all.

It depends on what is placing the cookies . Some info can be found out about the cookies in Firefox itself . But it is safe to say that we need some moreinfo in order to figure out what is going on here .

Questions for Overclocked2.4 :

1/ What cookies are you getting ?

2/ Are the cookies from sites that you or other users of the computer haven't visited ?

3/ What are your browser's settings regarding cookies and privacy ?

With that info , we can then start to try to diagnose or understand the problem .

The virus that is placing those cookies is Internet Explorer ;) (actually the web sites you visit). The best thing for the removal of cookies is Adaware. The best thing to prevent cookies is to disable cookies. But that leads to problems when using sites that require cookies.

You might also want to try MS AntiSpyware and set it as active. I haven't used IE with MSASW, but I can only assume that when you download a tracking cookie it will let you know.

Nope, he's ahead of the game, already using the right browser, but you are right where its just the websites that are leaving the cookies.

But I still state the fact that cookies are harmless and isn't worth worrying about.

Well then the virus is Firefox. My point was there is probably not a virus, its most likely the browser and the sites he visits thats doing it.
