Its my server im talking about here, i have a onboard scsi 2 cotnroller and a ultra 2 hdd. Its a seagate 18.2 10,000RPM if that helps. I have put one jumper on the scsi for ID 1. And in the scsi 'bios' thing it knows this. BUT when i select the disk and press enter i get a red box with "Unexpected SCSI Command Failure"
and the following things

Target SCSI ID: 1
SCSI CDB SENT: 03 00 00 00 ... etc
SCSI Controller Status: 00h - No SCSI controller error
Target Status: 02h - Check Condition
Sense Key: 02h - Not ready
+Sense Code: 04h
+Sense Code Qualifier: 00h

"Press 'Esc' to continue"

The scsi controller ID is 7 and where it says Capacity before the screen above where you have the option to format etc, it says "Capacity : ----".

Ive onlu put one jumper on the HDD because i don't know if i need LED SYN DLY MTR installed because i have one HDD only. I hope that is enough information for you. That is all i can think of right now

EDIT - it knows the name of the HDD SEAGATE then the code.

Thanks

Scott

Is it properly terminated and does the documentation state it should be jumpered as 1 and not 0 ?

The sense code inducates that the drive is not initializing properly and may be bad.

If you are trying to use it as a boot drive, the default ID for most controllers is 0 and should be set for that ID. This is not likely to be the case for this problem, as the drive should still initialize in SCSI BIOS in any ID.

As above, terimination is a very likely cause for SCSI errors.

Invalid jumper configurations may cause similar errors. Which model is the drive?

If you can get the drive to initialize, running the Seatools diagnostics is a good idea.

Ok thanks alot now atleast i have something to work with :). Ill try that now, and get you the model of the drive. :)

EDIT - Ive also noticed that it says 'Start Unit' and then

'Request Failed'

That might help you :).

The Documentation, by this you mean the stuff on the hdd i hope, because i only have the drive itself. I cant find much about ID ive tried both 0 and 1 both give me the same errors.

Heres the Drive

No pins should be connected on the J2 block. If they are not connected, then it should be starting and initializing properly, unless there are cable or termination problems or the drive is defective.

I will warn you that these are old loud and slow by todays standards.

Xaotic is right about the speed of the drive.I have 4 of the 9 gig ones with a controller card and even in raid0 my 40 gig dx740 was faster.

I got it for 10 pounds, which will be alot faster than my old 13gig which i sooooo sloooooow. Ill have a play with it see what i can do, the noise isnt to bad really.

Thanks.
