I think this is the correct forum for this question, if not, I am sorry.
With a 1.8g P4, how high can I reasonably expect to be able to OC the CPU without specialized cooling hardware?
Since the 2 gig P-4 was just released and it uses the same core as the 1.8 gig P-4, then I'd say that 2 gig is within reach, assuming you have a motherboard that has adjustable FSB. However, the very nature of overclocking means you should do a few basic cooling mods. Nothing that needs to be expensive. Removing the retail heatsink, cleaning the heat gunk off and then reinstalling with a good thermal paste is a good start. Lapping the heatsink don't cost but a few sheets of wet/dry sandpaper. For $10 or less, you can swap in a much more powerful CPU fan too. That will help move more air across the CPU heatsink.
Assuming this is one of the s-478 P4's. I've gotten my s-423 1.7 gig to post as high as 2.2GHz, and 2.1 is moderately stable. I'd guess you might get 2.1 fairly stable, and certainly 2 easy.
