I cant believe I saw that!!

burning a TBird just too see how hot it gets without the heatsink on!!!???

I hope they give the bird a proper burial atleast atleast......

I was very surprised they did that. Looks like some serious bad publicity for AMD.. I think Tomshardware might be getting a letter from AMD sometime soon..

But, what are the chances that your heatsink is going to fall off while the PC is running? Effective way of testing the clock-throttling of Intel CPUs, but not going to happen in the field.

Being an AMD user myself, I was a little annoyed at this article.. Not a fair test at all.

i think that this was not made to prove that intel was better than amd or visa versa....just to show what happens to the chips. I am sure your hsf is not gonna fall off in regular usage unless you have a really ghetto setup.

Cool concept. Video taping the open system with Quake running in the background so you can see the effects on system performance. Cool concept.

That video is priceless! Its not everyday that you see a T-bird in smoke! (well, for me at least) :)
... actually its :( for the T-bird, but :) for the work they done to make the video!

It is very possible that the H/S may fall off. The clamp pressure is getting way out of hand lately. You would be suprised at the amount of people that are rushed to get their system together and they do not do everything right. Take for example the guy who did not put ANY kind of thermal compound on. The many people who start their CPU's without a heatsink just to see if it will boot. The many people who try to O/C their system with no componets except for the CPU, M/B, power supply.

I do not think that Tom's Hardware will get any kind of letter from AMD. They know if you do not do things properly you WILL fry your chip. Intel just made their chip idiot-proof. AMD users like a challange.

AMD wouldn't care; they didn't do it to show AMD worst than Intel. In fact it shows you how Intel fails in overcooks, it tells you must be bellow 35C at all time, you can't bust the voltage that much even though the chip won't die till 60-70. It clearly shows how Intel wastes the great potential; they could have been farther ahead if they maxed it out before going to the next step.

And you got to admit that was worth the 2 athalons, the cool smoke and trance tune fit well, although at 370C I would expect much more than a few tiny smokes, I never knew it even goes that high, that's crazy!

Ever see a rock band smash their equipment on stage? That's what I though of as I watched the video. I felt it was a watse, confirming what we already knew-

Athlons run really really hot. Duh.

Better to lose a couple hundred dollars of CPU then a $1000 guitar, but still...

That being said I LOVE that video!!:D

Well it happends!
Just a reminder for those ppl building a pc :) Dont forget to up the HSF on

How was it not fair? They did the same thing to all chips and showed the results. I like AMD better myself too, but Intel is better when it comes to cooling.

personally, i thought the video was baddass how they showed the games slow/freeze/shut down. kinda sad to see two perfectly good chips fry like that, but that was funny as hell:D . i have to commend toms hw on doin that very nice job.

First off, Yes I thought the video was cool to watch..

But, I think considering Intel is known to use the clock throttling & AMD is known NOT to, I don't see why this test was even done.

Benchmarking to compare real-world speed I understand.. You want to know which CPU is better, but this was like "Lets take a ford and a toyota & remove the radiator & coolant from one & see which burns up faster". The CPUs weren't made or expected to run without a heatsink.. Why even test them without one?

I just think that people who don't know any better (which there are a LOT of) will look at this like, "Wow, AMD CPUs burn up! Lets buy Intel!"

This and the recent nonsense with the PR ratings & all.. AMD is looking worse & worse (to the average person).. Not that I would even think about switching!

A fellow posted a message here sometime ago that his heatsink came loose. His CPU burned.

I can see how it could happen, especially with these super heavy copper heatsinks. Instructions for the Millenium Glaciator for instance tell you to remove the heatsink whenever transporting the computer...
I love my Athlon, but the heat is a real problem.:(

oh the great things that you can do with a burnt out cpu. its all about experimenting and thats cool the toms hardware wanted to do it. just to let people know, heat kills cpus

I thought it was awsome. I really don't care that AMD chips get so hot considering how i would have to buy over 5 chips(1ghz AYHJA Y $85) to bring my costs up to buying a P4. IMHO if you spend $350 on a chip it shouldn't burn up if you run it over with a truck.

dirty rat ********, to kill not one, but two cpu's.
and to add insult they video taped it.

let us all bow our heads in a moment of silence.
ok the moment is over.

And yes, heatsinks can fall off at the very worst times. My roommate's Athlon went up in smoke because the HSF fell off while it was running. This test is a simple way to demonstrate what happens in circumstances like that.

My next rig will probably be an AMD, but now I know to look for an HSF/waterblock that attaches via motherboard screws rather than socket lugs.
