Hey. I want to reinstall windows xp pro oem on my stepdad's pc. The computer is so messed up with junk that no extra software can help it. It takes forever to boot up and there is so much spyware that several videos play when starting up! I was able to fix this on my step sister's pc, but she runs xp home from her dell cd. Problem is that he lost the original compaq discs that came with his computer. I tried using a friend's gateway cd to try to reinstall xp, but it didn't work. I need either an OEM disc or Compaq disc of xp pro. The OEM disc will work with the compaq cd key because with xp home, I reinstalled xp on another friend's comp from dell and used my cd with his dell cd key. Anyway, does anybody know where to find the cheapest OEM XP pro disc? I am worried of buying the academic with sp2 from newegg because it is the academic version and the cd key might not work. (after spending the money to buy it, I want to install it on my comp too, so I don't want to use the cd key it comes with and have 2 cd keys wasted on one crappy computer) Can anyone help me find an XP PRO OEM disc for a good price? I have found CD keys for sale online by themselves through pricewatch, but no CD's at any decent price.

Now is when you take a big breath, open your mouth, and scream at the top of your lungs "FCKGW!!!"...

You could call Compaq and get replacment discs for like $32 or so. Then no key to worry about. That is dirt cheap and you get all the drivers the machine came with.

If you buy an academic copy you get a new key with it... But like the guy says, see how Compaq can help first.

Do you have access to a XP Pro Retail disc?
Not that I am condoning this, but there's always p2p...If you're stepdad doesn't care and you've really paid for it already, I don't find it morally wrong. In essence its like a backup of what you have. You're entitled to it.

I would think anyone here would rather have a legit disc over a copy like that. We here in this overclockers forums don't use that method, or talk about it. Plus in the TOS when you signed up here it mentions about talk of such activities. :D There is legal things involved talking about that, and it kinda puts the forums in a bad spot. Please don't take this wrong, I am just giving friendly advice. Here is what I mean:
12. Discussion of the unauthorized reproduction, distribution, copying, or theft of copyrighted materials is forbidden. This includes, but is not limited to discussion of the use of peer to peer (P2P) applications for the purpose of obtaining copyrighted material.
