Hello,

One more small question. I have an ati 9600XT which while a decent card, hasnt givien me the performance I'd like with Doom3. I read the sticky for overlcocking and tweaking videocards and I was amazed by the amount of programs available. So I was wondering whether anyone could recomend the safest yet most effective program to tweak my video card since I figure trying each one for effect could be pontentially disasterous. Again, thanks for any help.

Cheers,
Biermann

Usually what people do to overclock their ATi cards is a combination of 2 programs.

The first is ATI tool:
http://3dgpu.com/archives/2005/01/11/new-version-of-ati-tool/

The second which actually overclocks the card is Radlinker:
http://www28.brinkster.com/chrisww1942/

You first install rad-clocker and then use the ATi tool to find your maximum clocks. Once you have that information available you apply those speeds to radclocker <which will be in your distplay driver tab> and thats all.:D

You also need rTool...becasue the ATi drivers and radlinker will not totally disable trilinear AF...you will be able to totally enable bilinear AF then...

rTool (http://www.3dcht4u.de/3dc/kfd53t5fes8z/rtool.zip)

So in which order should I use the three of these tools? And is rad-linker the same as rad-clocker? Thank you for your help.

the omega drivers are also good for overclocking. www.omegacorner.com

I second the omega drivers. They offer a bit more performance than the catalysts and it comes with radlinker for overclocking.

Kind of strange circumstance... There was a power surge that re-started my computer as I was testing for max core and now when i run the test i get "error dorung Direct3D Init." How do i fix this problem? Thank you for any time and effoert spent.

remove ati tool from programs, reinstall, most likely lost something when your power went out.its a very small program anyways.good luck with your overclock.oh ya omega drivers all the way!!

You could try re-installing it or maybe even just running the disk checker during start-up.

It really doesnt matter the order...but I tend to just use radlinker and rTool...and unless you know a lot about video card memory timings...not a lot you can do with ATI Tool and tweaking...

The best way I found is too...turn the drivers down using the ATI control panel...then go to radlinker and make sure everything is completely set to lowest settings...then use rTool to set the drivers from trili. to bili.

Alright, that makes perfect sense, but I'm still getting the "direct3d init" error even after re-installing ati tool. This leads me to beleive i have a missing or corrupted file somewhere and i can't finnd a windows 64bit installation of directx anywhere!!! So first off I need to figure out exactly what is wrong before i go any farther palying with the video card. Any suggestions where i might find a direct3d installation for windows 64bit would be more than welcome and any other ideas on how to fix this problem would be greatly apreciated.

Cheers all,

I don't know that much about trilinear and bilinear. Which is better?

I don't know that much about trilinear and bilinear. Which is better?

Trilinear is for eye candy

Bilinear is for faster performance

think of Tril as 32 bit mode and Bil as 16 bit mode...

Also...rTool will not run correctly in win64 or if you are using the ATI control center...

JBierm44 - Which win64 build are you running?

JBierm44

versoin 2003, service pack 1, v.1218

win64 doesnt have a service pack since it is a beta OS...are you positive about the service pack?

But anyways...download the latest build...the 1289...this should help with the DX issue(s)...

Right-o

I'll be installing 1289 tonight. I'll be anxious to see how the omega drivers work because appearntly trying to find an ATI driver that works for 1289 is a real pain in the arse. Maybe the omega drivers will save me the hassle of finding an ati install and modding the .inf file? Because that would be super.

So before I try any shenagains with my 9600XT under the 1289 version of windows 64 any suggestions as to whether i should find and install standard ati beta drivers and use sti-tool, rad-linker etc. to mod my vid card or go stright for thge omega drivers?? Do i need ati radeon drivers installed before i can install the omega drivers?? Im beginning to question my sanity, please help ;)

I am very eager to read the responses to your thread. I also have an ati radeon 9600xt vid card and want to oc it. I think i've been inspired to start my own thread and ask a bunch of newbie questions

Heh, im glad my attempts might help. But first I think theres a problem with ati-tool. I selected find max core last night and went to bed... and 6 hours later it was still searching for max core... how long are these tests supposed to last? Thanks for any help.

I'm pretty sure u simply search for max core until u feel it has reached that point. The program will report the highest core without errors i do believe and i received a max core of 570 when i ran mine. Since u have the ati radeon 9600xt, we have the same exact brand therefore i would also assume yours would be relatively close to mine. Then again, you have a watercooled system so i would then imagine that heating is of no relevence to you. You can probably max out the complete capabilities of the card. Rerun the test for an extended amount of time and record the time displayed after some odd hours, dido for memory. And viola, you have an educated guess at what you can achieve with stability. Obviously test it out afterwards and see what happens.

According to the rad-linker websight radlinker is used specificly per game/application. Is there anyway to use radlinker to make an overall overclock that is universally applicible to all programs? I'd like to physicaly "turn up" my card permeneantly with having to create a new radlink file for each new game I want to play. Seems strange that I cant access universal settings under my cards display tabs...

Yes, when u start radlinker, at the bottom it displays "boot bios defaults", then they proceed to give u two options; Bios defaults and Use Current Settings. Select use current settings to boot to those specified speeds.

That's just my problem though, I cant "start" radlinker anywhere. There is no .exe, no tab under settings... nothing. I install it and it registers as installed but I cant do a thing with it if I cant figure out how to open the damn thing ;). Thanks for helping ill.

cheers

right click anywhere on your desktop...click on radlinker...right under refresh...

Also...right click...properties...settings...advance...radlinke r tab...

You can click on a icon and then go to custom settings just for that certain game/app

It must be soemthing with Win64 because none of those options come up.... very strange indeed! Maybe I can just use powerstrip...

Just stop the headache and install the regular 32 bit version you wont notice the difference

if radlinker is not showing up on win64...this means that the ATI drivers was not totally installed correctly...I was having this very same issue with build 1289 and any ATI drivers...and also had issues with the realtek win64 sound drivers...seems like the 11-- win64 build was actually better then the latest 1289 RC1 build...at least I could get everything installed and working correctly with the 11-- build...

For the most part I really like the new build. It works quickly and most everything runs. It's just these little things that irk me.
