I am planning on making a server to host CS:Source on. I have the internet connection to back it up, some of you may have seen it the other day, its fast.

I dont know what Source needs to run, I dont know if it is processor, RAM, HD, or just Network dependant.

What are some good specs? Would it be reasonable to think that I can run 8-10 servers off of this rig?

Dual AMD Opteron 242, 1.6Ghz (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-389&catalog=23&manufactory=BROWSE)

Dual WD 10k RPM 74GB HDs (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=22-144-160&catalog=23&manufactory=BROWSE)

2GB OCZ Enhanced Latency Series (512MBx4) Registered DDR PC-3200 (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=20-146-940&catalog=23&manufactory=BROWSE)

Tyan Mobo (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=13-151-125&catalog=23&manufactory=BROWSE)

550W Power Supply (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=13-151-125&catalog=23&manufactory=BROWSE)

Price is coming out about $1700 all said and done.

I'm not sure but 8-10 seems a lot to me. But then again I don't know very much about servers.

How fast is your connection?

Only supercomputers could run 8-10 servers alright with CS:S. I would say two servers at the most. The big thing is whether or not you have the bandwidth. You can have the fastest computer ever made, but if you only have 14.4, you'll never host a good server.

Our dual Opteron sever with 2gbs of ram, runs a both a CS:s Server and and HL2DM server without a hitch, I doubt you could run more than one server per processor though

Hmm... Valve itself recommends a 2.4ghz intel (at least) for one source server. With 2x1.6ghz opterons and 2gb of ram, I bet you could run two 16 player servers easily (depending on your network connections). If you have the right kind of bandwidth, I bet you could get away with up to 4 servers.

You should be able to run 3 or 4 servers with that equipment, provided of course you have the bandwidth and depending on how many people you allow per server. My server is an Athlon XP mobile 2400+ @ 2GHz, 1GB PC3200, and a Maxtor 160GB IDE hard drive and my little 10 person dedicated server doesn't even phase it at all.

Yeah, Im all set on the bandwidth :p

I emailed VSK for a couple things and they said they usually run 1 HL2 per box, along with 6-7 other games. The other games must be pretty low-end.

My server is slightly better than theirs, so I was hoping for a little more.
