View Full Version : FSB or Multiplier

I, I'am new here (read article for week, new to post)

What is the best for overcloaking, the Multiplier or the FSB?

I mean... 12X100MHZ or 9X133MHZ ??? or 8.5X140MHZ

also, I was wondering if my temp are ok,

I got a T-bird (1.2) and my temp under load are between 54-56C so is that correct or no...

Temp where a little bit higher before my first mod... I take a holesaw and drill a Hole directly where the cpu is in the back of my tower, I put a 80mm fan and now the temp are 10C minus than before I mean a drop from 65 to 55 is great (temp under load with Seti)

Thanks

Well for speed, upping the FSB would be better, but usually to get a good set speed you have to adjust both back and forth. Now your load temps seem a BUT high, but nothing to outrages. I woukd suggest ASII

Upping the FSB give you an increase to more components within the computer and therefore more speed but it also means there are more things that could go wrong. More links in the chain = greater odds of having a weak one.

some chips will do good at just using the multiplier, like mine, but some chips just don't like it. The best way is to just try all the different comboc that is available to you.

You are tight, FSB is better

I made some benchmark using sandra2001 and with the fsb , the performance was better....

I will test that with some Seti unit.

T-Bird 1.2@1.4 multiplier
and
T-Bird 1.2@1.314 (FSB)

so give me 2-3 day to chek what is the best (temp and performance) and I get back to you guys

For the best combo of stability/speed, I'd recommend like a 150MHz FSB with the highest multiplier you can use. More FSB will make it even faster, but not all components are happy beyond 150MHz FSB . . . . .

I tink that if I got to 150 fsb with higer multiplier, i will have a heat issue,

what do you tink of the new koolance case, is it great....

I'am a bit confuse about those watercooling system since I go to 1 LAN each month, I have to take the comp in my car.....
is the water system ok for handling?
or do I need to empty it every time?

try to increase the FSB as much as possible and thn fiddle with the multiplier
make the rams work hard and set the multipliers low

fsb is bascially everything in seti

FSB or Multiplier?!?!?! One isn't really better than the other when your goin for MAX O/C if you really think about it. Anyone will try to get the highest FSB & Multiplier that they can get w/o sacrificing stability. If you got 166MHz(332DDR) FSB but is not stable or only half of your PCI cards work then why go for it.

FSB is better, as its the speed the the CPU communicates with everything else! the cpu could run at 99999999 GHZ but with a FSB of 1 hert, a 500 mghz @100 mghz FSB would trounce it

That's not my point. If you can go with 100MHz FSB then why not find the highest possible multiplier? One can not live w/o the other. That's also the reason why we like AMD 'cause we CAN adjust the multiplier along with the maxing out of the FSB.

Well, fsb will really speed up the machine over all. But becareful not to run your pci/agp cards to hard. I've blown a videocard and a lan card in one week running to hard.

just a warning.

my pci was running 38 and agp 78 or 76 I don't remember exactly. but it certainly murdered the cards.

what did you set the FSB to???
I can run mine at 156 but I don't have any green paint left if somthing were crap out I wouldn't be thrilled.

True, It is usefull to find the limit of the chip without overclocking other components. Once you find that limit, lower the mulitplier and start pushing the FSB. If you have a DDR or KT133A chipset (686B southbridge) you have the advantage of a 1/4 PCI multiplier. which allows you to use 133FSB and still run the PCI/AGP busses at 33/66. Higher FSB's=Higher memory bandwith. The other advantage of FSB overclocking you can raise the speed in smaller increments. Where multiplier adjustments are 50 to 66.5 MHZ jumps. Using the muliplier alone I could only get my 800 Tbird to 950. Using the FSB an a lower mulitplier I got 973 (7.0 x 139) out of it and raised my SiSoft Sandramemory bandwith scores 25% :D

That's IT!!! But isn't it lower the multiplier to use 133MHz(10X100=7.5X133) then you start increasing the FSB a little at a time(1MHz increments) until the other components, AGP & PCI, find their limit then you start increasing the multiplier to get the maximum O/C? Oh well that's just me.

The cards were cheap. One was a diamond viper 330 4 meg agp. The other was a reltec lan card 10mb.

Fsb settings 110 for about a month.
145x8.5 =1235 for 3 weeks
150x8.5 =1275 for a day

Died at 110fsbX13multi.

re did my bridges with defogger and now i'm running at
11x133=1466

The agp and pci are in spec now. Which should help.

Gimmie that again. You got a better overclock just by switching from lead/graphite to defogger paint??

thefly
09-20-01, 05:56 PM
yes.

I had done the bridges with a stanford hb2 pencil. with that setup i could do 8.5x150 or 13x110.

strangly i could do all the multipliers from

7.5 to 13 at low fsb up to 110 fsb. but nothing past 8.5 at a decent fsb speed. I figured it was my chip.

after talking with the fellows here they advised to redo the bridges with defogger.

now i can do 1466 no problem. 11x133.

I can boot at 11.5x133 but it freezes after about 2 mins.

Honestly, the pencil trick was holding me back. defogger is so much better.

here is the bench if you like.

I think the pensil just wasn't conductive enough.

The defogger kit was 8 bucks at Canada tire.

I knew the chip was good because I could crank it to 13x.
i was confused to why it wouldn't do 133fsb over 8.5

anyway, after redoing the l1 bridges with a pensil the second time, the results were wierd, i could hit some multis and not others.

defogger did the trick for me.

cheers.

I'm not trying to start anything but do you actually have a Canadian Tire in your area? Shouldn't it be "Le Tire du Canadien" or "Tire Quebecois"? I'm not judging or anything, I'm just asking.

09-20-01, 11:46 PM
aha. grin.

actually they are indeed called Canada tire.

Surprised it's not against the law. Grin.

Call the seperatists immediately.

here is a listing of a few if you're ever in town and looking for
defogger paint.

Like u have said guy, I found out that the best to overcloak was combination of multiplier of FSB and multiplicator,

Right now I'am not going to overcloak it cuz I dont have good temp, I'am gonna move to a water cooling system later this year (probably before christmas) and after that I could go to some overclock...

thanks guy for the support

You Quebecois' know what I love? When Cretien tries to speak english. Damn that's one of the funniest things you can ever hear. And lemme point out that I know and freely admit that his english is better than my french but I don't try to speak french because I'd butcher the language. One time he went on about a new program that his govornment had "Devil Loped". Devil Lope? What the hell is that? Some kind of evil antalope? It took me 3 minutes to figure out he meant "developed". I'm not trying to trash him, I think he's doing a good job, but damn is he rediculously hillarious to listen to! :D :D :D

Well, in times like these, a little comedy isn't a bad thing.

Personally, i think he's a pretty good leader. A bit wishy washy at times. Like, i think he should be more behind the US on this anti terror campain.

I would think that you chip is a god one and is not at its limits yet. If Its t 1510 with that temp if you can get it down to a load of 42-43 you might get 1600+ my idle temp is 37-38 and load is 44 max. and i cannot get 1600 stable, you must have a good chip

Try a better HS , like the Sk6 or the Glaciator

I had mine (t-bird 1.2) at 1.6 but hte temp where à 67C under load so I'am going to move to watercooling soon (when I got a new job)
