I just know people are gonna hate this thread... but please bare with me as I've been out of the loop for around 2 years now. I barely remember my rig back then... 1900+ overclocked to 2100+ speed I believe... watercooled... nice case... Gainward GF3 TI200 overclocked to around TI500 speed.........

So now I need to ask...

What are the pros and cons of Intel these days?

AND

What are the pros and cons of AMD these days?

I'm looking at price vs performance... who's chip in what setup stands above the rest... why's the sky blue?

Oh... and I only make $8.50 an hour and do pay rent so price is of utmost importance :D

Intel:
Pros = Already uses DDR2, very stable, Hyper-threaded
Cons = Slow, runs QUITE hot

AMD
Pros = Very fast...MUCH faster than any Intel in gaming, Generally cheaper, runs very cool
Cons = Unstable as hell and *very* picky about RAM, uses older DDR1

Best price peformance = 3.2ghz (E0s) on LGA775 or 3200+ on Socket939 (Winchester core)

Socket939 is Intel I assume?

And whats the deal with the AMD 64FX processors... I just read a little on thier website... 2000 Mhz FSB? Worth $150 from Newegg?

Also... the rig I build will be used as a 3dmark king... it's only fitting

Socket 939 is the new AMD socket for now. Socket 775 is the new LGA P4 socket.

No. Socket 939 and 754 is AMD, Land-Grid-Array 775 is Intel. You need to only worry about S939, S754 is purely a budget platform and itsnt worth your time.

_____

As for the bus its just a sham. Its physcially 1ghz, they try to inflate it by giving it its true DDR rating. All S939 CPUs have a technical 2ghz bus.

If its a 3dmark king then you need to look at a S939 rig. Wanna know why?

Btw the only benefit to getting an FX is having a fully unlocked processor. Regular A64s can only use multipliers lower than their maximum, ie they are unlocked only donward

example:

3200+ = 200x10
(they have access to 10 and under but not over 10.

So that's comparing the old XP to the new 64?

And what about the price? Where should I be shopping?

Correct. Thats my old AXP up against my new S939 Winchester 3200+ @ 2.6ghz

I'm darn near sold :D

Just need to know what and where to buy the parts... I only have a floppy and an HD. I still will need EVERYTHING else... but I'll just buy one thing every couple weeks or so... no rush while I've got a loaner PC :D

Oh... and can the regular 64's be unlocked, making them FX's? And if not... which is which? Newegg just lists the speed and that it's a 64... not if it's an FX or not.
