Hello, I'm fairly new to the overclocking world, but after doing some reading and keeping my budget in mind I was able to put some parts to gether that I will use to OC an intel P4 2.4A prescott with 533mhz FSB and 1mb L2 cache.

Motherboard: MSI Neo-FIS2R
Cooling: Pentagram QC-80 Cu
Video Card: Ati Radeon 9700 pro with 128mb

All i need now is some advice on a power supply and memory. Could someone tell me how to reach the fabled 3.5ghz with this cpu, and what memory and/or power supply will help me reach that goal?

Thanks

It helps to know what your budget was, if price is not an issue with any prescott i say get an OCZ PowerStream, other wise forton and sparkel are safe buys and decent psu's

Well I'd like to spend up to $150 on Ram and about $100 on a PSU

Then buy the OCZ they look great and are supper stable. Is there any chance i can switch you to AMD?? in IMO they are better bang for the buck.

I know what you mean, I used to have an AMD system, but had to sell it :( . I decided to go with intel only because i got the motherboard for only $75 and the cpu for about $100. Unless you'd like to buy my parts, or find someone who wants em, im gonna have to stik with the p4

Thats cool. The only other thing your going to want is some TCCD bases memory like the PDP/Patriot that can run 2-2-2-6, because fast memeory is king when it comes to the prescott.

is that because of the 1mb cache compared to the northwood 512? Also, does the wattage of the powersupply mattter. And hpow much RAM should i get. ALso (i know this is asking a lot, but could u give me a very rough expectations form aquamark?) my current 1.7ghz is really crappy lmao.

Wattage matters (should be at least 450 or more watts), but so does the +12v amps (like at least 20A). With a power hungry Prescott, the bigger the power supply, the better the overclock. The Fortron 530w is decent as is either the Antec True 480w or 550w.

ok, sounds good thanks for the help. Now that I think i got the hardware aspect down, could anyone tell me what I actually need to do to reach 3.5ghz. Like voltages, fsb speed, and is my cooling sufficient?

I don't know much about that CPU cooler you selected. Assuming it's fairly decent, you'll still need good case ventilation. Maybe check out the two links that I have posted in my signature, especially the one about case modding.

Well, with a 2.4A Prescott you'll need 200 FSB for 3.6 gig, 195 FSB for 3.51 gig, and 189 FSB for 3.4 gig. Do not exceed 1.5v (less is better). Don't increase vcore until you have to in order to improve stability.

ok, yea i checked out both of the links u posted. I'm definitely adding a fan at the top of the case to blow out, along with that prescott mod ( plumbing tube). Results are fantastic. I want to remove my old gpu heatsink and use it for the southbridge on my mobo. Any ideas of how to do this?
