Does anyone have any internet guides/links to books, ect on how to hollow out the inside of a hill? Thanks.

Well, it has been done but not often. Cheyenne Mountain was hollowed out to provide a secure location for our missile defense command (NORAD). However, the specifics are going to depend on what the nature of the hill is. Can you give us a size/composition and a pic or two?

I think all you have to do is as you digging through, set up supports on the sides to hold up a sort of beam on the top to keep the thing from caving in.

Please be safe. We might offer suggestions, but use common sense. Talk to an engineer or a miner, Or better yet a mining engineer.

What you are talking about is an Earth sheltered structure.
there are many plans for these type of buildings, Googleing
Earth sheltered Homes, or just Earth sheltered should yeild desirable results

Are we talking of earth sheltered structures? Those can be rather easily built by putting stuff on top of a building that has been put up in the conventional manner. The first post leads me to think otherwise...

a Majority of Earth Sheltered Structures are built into Hills,
Earth bermed structures tend to be conventional structures with earth added after the fact

ever been there, or near?

i hear they give civillian tours, but when i was stationed near there, youd get to see B-2 stealth bombers @ 1500' altitude, and the whole place just had that "big brother" feel to it... 24/7

I used to have an underground fort when I was a kidd. I started to dig and used plywood as I got further in. When it rained hard it all fell in though. Was fun for the summer, minus the leaks and such. That place had every "skeeter" in town in it too.

Drop a Grand Slam on it. Makes a nice crater 70 feet wide.

I got a good picture of one where a rail tunnel had been exposed :D

Nope. A secret Lair because im a villain :D. Uh its just a normal hill.. maybe 10-15 feet high from level ground. I'll try and get a picture of it. Its covered in snow right now so this will be a summer project. Just a simple way of safely keeping the thing up is what im looking for.. right now.. until I can get my evil organization moved outta my mothers basement into there mwhahahaha. jk. :) thx for the replies everyone

I was thinking more along the lines of 'Hobbit Hole', but your suggestion is much more plausable.

if i wasnt so busy that would be a really cool project....behind my house is a 30 or so foot drop, to a small dirt road. That would be a greap place to build a cave, and that would make a really cool little "chillin" place to set up a few computers, a fan, and a sound system!

Id need to wire my own circuit breaker and a heavy duty wire, because i would pull quite a bit of power into there...

I wish i was in highschool and i could do that. Then again, i dont technically have to work full time over the summer....too bad the rest of my life is needy....it sounds like fun.

i suppose you would need to build some support structure to keep the opening if the hole from falling in, then support the top and sides with plywood and 2X4
s...thats a really tough project if the hill is soft earth.

Yea, I don't think I'll be able to do it at this particular hill, especially when the snow melts and softens. However... I have another soon-to-be-evil-lair picked out to be investigated. Thanks for the replies everyone. To be honest.. I wasn't expecting to get such good feedback ^^
