The above link is a MUST SEE. I, for one, was really surprised. Not only about the P4 running w/o a HSF, but that an athlon can heat up to 370 degrees celcius! Check the link. ;)
Yeah that movie is pretty cool. A few months ago the fan quit on my P4's heat sink. I didn't notice for upwards of two days because the box was just crunching seti. I finally noticed the machine was locked up, so I rebooted and it locked up while windows was loading. I was a little puzzled so I rebooted and went into the bios. I was checking all the settings and when I got to pc health I noticed the cpu temp pegged at 200* F. I literally pulled the plug. I let it cool off and got the fan working again (cheap pass through connector) and the cpu has been fine ever since. At the time I was amazed, but seeing the P4 run with nothing attached is truly amazing. Considering how hot AMD chips run, they ought to implement some kind of thermal protection. I really like the Epox 8K7A boards that have a temperature shutdown feature in the bios.

that's why i never believe on amd......
amd suck.....intel all the way.

They dont suck, even though I personally buy intel:cool:, its VERY good to have competion. Imagine if intel were the only ones making CPUs, it would get a little pricey :(

AMD's don't suck at all. Intel's just run cooler. AMD's run quite nicely provided they have sufficient cooling. I happen to prefer Intel, but I'm planning on building an AMD system before the year is out.

That settles it, my next box is going to be a p4.. :)

Intel more MHz blah blah blah Athlon's too hot blah blah blah
Fact. MHz for MHz, AMD perform better.
Fact, next time I need a space heater I'm taking the fan off my TBird!
Both cpu's good, expensive cpu's bad.
competition good, slamming competition bad!
Movie good! Anyone got marshmallows?

just thought i'd let everyone read that again :)

And why that matters I don't know. If it runs at 10,000 MHz and does just as much as something running half that speed - it's still getting the job done. Is the processor that does more at a slower clock speed better than one that does the same amount at a faster clock speed? Should cpu's always be designed to do the same amount per clock cycle that they have in the past? There's more than one way to reach an end goal.
I'll tell you another thing. AMD isn't quite as cheap after you have to replace the cpu and motherboard. I guess AMD's idea of thermal protection is adding the four holes around the cpu so you can make sure the heatsink doesn't fall off, but even that doesn't help much if the fan quits. I'm happy with the performance of my AMD boxen, but I have had to replace several boxes that I sold because the thing was fried when the heatsink broke the socket clips and fell off, in some cases partially and a few times completely. It's not very fun when a customer calls and tells you their computer literally just burned up. That hurts my reputation and takes money out of my pocket. Now I have buy more expensive heat sinks and take more time mounting them to insure this doesn't happen anymore, but unfortunately I still get pass through connectors that short out and stop the fan. Haven't found a convenient cure for that yet.

yes and once AMD did suck, remember the K6-2? and remember how frickin much Intel used to charge for Pentiums!!

I'm downloading this video clip now and i can't wait to see it. I no longer bash AMD for they are faster clock / clock but i'm still an Intel fan and never will change. You guys that have AMD's i'm surprised none of you have not come up with the old saying "Size doesn't matter" referring to intels 1.7 ghz vs AMDs 1.4 ghz! Notice i'm not mentioning the Intel 2.0 ghz <<<< faster!
How come nobody ever mentions VIA? LOL, joking. Although they do run extremely cool. Too bad they dont get thier acto together and start making a chip that competes, that would help drive costs down some more.:o

Yep - we can thank AMD for better consumer choices and prices. I wish there was an AMD equivalent in the OS market. Linux just doesn't seem to be making the dent I wish it would - even though I use windows almost entirely. I really do like MS products, but I wish they would get off their butts and get rid of the bugs. Easier said than done, but still I can wish.
I was amazed when I saw that video. For the first time I actually considered buying a P4, I am a huge AMD fan, but I will admit that the P4's thermal protection is very impressive.
