View Full Version : Odd problem

I have been having a strange problem today: I cannot turn my computer on. Well, it will turn on, but it won't do anything.

If I plug the power supply up (it doesn't have an on/off switch), the system automatically powers up, but it doesn't boot; fans spin and the LEDs are on (the LED on my CD drive, too), but no booting. If I attempt to actually press the power button, it stays in the same state.

Previously I thought this problem may have been somewhat related to my CD drive, as when I turned on the computer yesterday, the CD drive would open itself and not close. If I closed it, it would open right back up.

I have tried two power supplies that are very much on their last legs, but to no avail. My system worked fine last night, but I turned it off expecting it to boot up fine this afternoon.

I'm hoping that my new PC&P, when it arrives, will fix these problems, but I'm beginning to think that it may be my motherboard.

Any suggestions? If you guys think it's not a PSU problem, I'll kick this thread wherever you think it should go.

Thanks in advance, as always :)

No post at all? Try booting with only the cpu and ram installed, no hard drive or cdroms. Sounds like the mobo though... thats what happened after my old computer's psu went.

Tried that, no go.

Something that is different from before though. I got my new DDR Booster yesterday, and I discovered that my motherboard hates it for some reason. Corrupted my install of Windows and caused overall instability.

This is an NF7-S with the vtt tracking mod, BTW.

did you try taking out the booster and resetting the cmos?

yeah, sounds like your mobo no-likey something... you might have shorted something since it keeps turning your power supply on, but with nothing else.

Tried that, too.

A much more electrically inclined friend took a look at the two power supplies I was using and gave them a thumbs-down for computer operation. Evidently I've been a little rough on them. We'll see how things go when I get the new PSU.

Try updating your BIOS to a modded one and use Award Winflash to do it. This way you can clear the DMI pool which is how your drives are assigned. That should clear up any issues with your CDROM drives

I can't get into the BIOS, the system doesn't POST.

Just one thought to try if you can-
yank the video card and try another.

I have a probably dead GF4 here that doesn't report a vga bios during post so the system stops with all lights lit, etc.
When I toss another card in, all is fine.

It may not be the problem, but it is something easy to check if you have a spare card.

I'll try that out tomorrow afternoon if I have the time, thanks :)

Take out your ram and boot. See if it gives you the warning beep. If it doesnt give you the warning it should, then the mobo is shot. If it does give you the warning tone, then it could be video.

This seems to have something to do with your RAM banks. I concur with apu318.

thats a weird problem....
i think somthings shorted out...check the back for anything that can short somthing out on the mobo and see if the mobo is properly installed (plastic washers missing maybe?) did you move the computer in any way before you went to sleep? maybe somthing moved and shorted the mobo out...
just my 2 cents...i hope i help..

My system hates me, that's got to be it :p

I sure hope I don't have to buy ANOTHER NF7-S (I'm on my 5th one).
