I fdisked and formatted both of my WD drives. Partitioned: C: 10GB, D: 18GB, E: 28GB. I did not create a RAID array. I then booted up with the latest version of WIN XP, and started following directions. It installs a bunch of stuff and then says that the computer will restart and setup will continue. Well, that never happens, it restarts, goes through the normal finding of the drives and then the screen goes blank except for a blinking cursor at the top of the screen. It stays that way until I ctrl-alt-del. What am I doing wrong? My setup is in my sig.

try just leaving your drive completely blank, and partitioning it through the XP install. XP is basically Win2k, so it'll probably have an option for it.

I tried that also. The two drives are connected (on separate cables) to IDE3&4, which are the ATA100 RAID IDEs. Can I still use those two IDEs even if I am not using a RAID array? Maybe XP doesn't like this???

The answer to your question can be found at the KT7 FAQ here...

...under "Disks" in the FAQ section.;)

I went there, repeatedly - it didn't contain much help, and didn't say anything about XP.

Try installing one drive and letting Xp format it. remove all cards, sound ,nic etc. My two cents

you would have to still install the drivers for the raid, even if your not running a raid

I took the drives off ide3&4, put them both on ide1, and it worked. Running fine in ata100 mode. I guess XP didn't like the RAID controller?

check and see if you have a new driver for your raid. if not try ghosting your install, then create the raid and install the image from ghost, i know this works.

I also have a KT7A-R in one of my systems and am running W2K on it. I have 2 WD 30gig ata100 7200rpm drives confugured in raid 0. In order to get this to work you have to press f6 in the begining of the install so that you can load the drivers for the raid controler. W2K will not work with the controler unless you do this weather or not you are using a raid setup. I am sure it is the same with XP. I have XP installed on another box so I haven't tested it out with raid yet but if after some more testing it proves to hold up I will prob put it on my KT7A-R instead of W2K.

BTW Shtweazel nice flag avatar you are using! I wonder where you could have possibally found that at :D

I tried pressing f6 and installing the latest RAID controller, and the XP installation locked up. Maybe it has a problem with the version I was trying to use. It was a WIN2K driver; I think that's what you're supposed to use, though. I thought the suggestion that we all use patriotic pics was right on, so I, uh, borrowed the closest one.....hehehehehehe.

I have been reading the Microsoft XP newgroups and there are a lot of people having trouble installing XP if they have a Raid controller. Those that did get XP installed had lots of disk errors and lost data.....As a side note lots had trouble installing XP with a GeForce card in. The fix for that was to use some old cheapy PCI/AGP card to install XP and then once XP is filly installed switch cards to the GeForce. XP detects the GeForce and all is OK. Some setup bugs it seems....

My nephew and I tried to do a fresh install of XP corporate on my system last night and had many, many problems. I have both a Geforce 3 and a KT7A Raid mobo. The problem was the raid controller, without a doubt. We got the XP logo show after the f6 raid controller/scsi controller install, and then the screen freezes. After reading a few forums (including this one) it seems that about %50 got XP to install, and %50 didnt. You would think that Microsoft would have seen this coming during beta testing, but it seems that WE are the beta testers. This SHOULD NOT be a problem and users should not have to comb through a forest of faq's and forums to install an operating system. This is complete BS. Also, I wish when the mobo manufacturers come out with a new component such as raid, they would make it an option so you could install/remove the onboard component to enable/disable the feature. Maybe in a perfect world i guess.Back to 98SE. :(

you need to hit the f6 key when it asks and make sure you have the drivers for your raid and then it will work.

you cant install a regular os on a raid controller without the raid beininstalled.

look at it this way

hard drive - wall - peace and harmony

cant go through the wall so the drivers provide the ladder to go over the wall so you get peace and harmony
