I finally got my birthday present of my 9700 pro today. It is on the system in my sig with an Athlon XP 1800 (stock) and 512MB Pc2100 ram.
I own a Compaq :bang head so installation was slightly awkward, there is a MATX mobo and one of the ram heatsinks sits millimetres from my Dimm bank 1.
I installed and on this system it runs HL2 reasonably well at 1024x768 medium settings, no 2xAA/no AF. This compares to a friends machine who has an A64 3000 and 1gig of ram but is crippled by a Geforce FX5200.
I tried overclocking it in ATI Tool. Stock is 325/550 and I overclocked it to 350/630 on stock cooling with no artifacts at all. Is this a vaguely decent overclock for this card (it is built by Ati 9700 pro with 128mb 256bit ram.) Also if I bought an ATI silencer would this cool the card to get a higher OC?
In 3d mark 03, I got 4581 marks at 350/630 and 4252 at 325/550. I noticed slightly higher FPS in HL2 from this overclock as well.
To accompany this VGA, I bought a 425watt Hiper PSU. I thought that the 285watt Lite-On PSU wouldn't cope so well with the new card but I was wrong. It is running my 9700p and my normal system fully stable. The only problem I have is that the mobo power on the PSU is for a normal ATX mobo and the socket on the mobo is for MATX mobo power and is smaller so I couldn't install the PSU. I found it rather odd that this low power, supposedly not very good PSU can easily handle the card and system especially seeing as ATI reccomend a 300w minimum PSU for normal operation.
