I don't know when, I saw an article saying that you could do a fresh install of windows even with only the Upgrade version. HOW ??? I tryied it with windows 98SE (I only have the upgrade), but it said that it needed Microsoft Windows to install ! So how to do this ?

Still have Windows 3.1 disks? If you do you can use those. That's what I did.

Does Windows 3.1 needs to be installed ? Or do those disks only start the install of 98 ? And by disks, did you mean CD-ROM, or diskette 3¼ ?

You do not need to install win 3.1, just have a disk ready for windows to check against that you are upgrading.
When i installed win98, I just put my win95 cd in when the win98 installer asks for it.

Just one problem, when I type in E:\win98\setup.exe or whatever the command is, it says "this program requires Microsoft Windows". How can I start the install then ?
If your using the 3.5's keep trying them until you find the one with file that "98 uses" for the program check.
I just installed ME with and upgrade version of 98. so you just need a windows cd

OK, I made a Windows Boot Disk (cuz my win98 CD isn't bootable (is that normal ?)). Now, when I boot the PC from the diskette, and I type in e:\win98 then setup.exe, it says "this application requires Microsoft Windows". Is this normal ? And what to do to make it install ?

no it isnt normal that your win cd is not bootable...burned copy ??? or is it the upgrade from win 95 ??? i do believe the upgrade isnt a bootable cd..but plz dont quote that :)perhaps your disk is one of those usless "recover" discs you get when you buy crap like e machine...

The upgrade win98 cd is not bootable. If you are using an upgrade version the setup.exe should be in the root dir and not \win98\.

There's a setup.exe file in both the root and the \win98 folder, but both say that "this program requires microsoft windows" Is it normal or did Compaq just give me a f***ed up 98 CD ?
P.S.: I use a 98 bootdisk, should I try with a win3.1 or dos bootdisk ?
You should be fine using a win98 boot disk, just make sure that when you boot you choose of course the load with cd rom support. You have done a fresh format of the harddrive as well ? The setup exe should be in the win98 Dir, if you are getting an error like that chances are you got a bad disk somehow. Sorry, as for the Installing windows from an upgrade yes, you can do that with all of them starting with win98, all you need is a full cd of Win95 or Win3.1 it is just verifying that yes indeed you do own a full version of a Microsoft product.
Hope that helps!

Here's what is said on the CD (in the pic)
BTW, just in case it has any importance, the CD came with my Compaq computer
heres a quick thought...when i boot to dos using win98se comand.com... it tells me loading win98...that it self might be enuff to fool it if you are using dos...who knows maybe it is worth the try
