what do i lose setting the minimum size for the swap file larger than the system will ever need?
i have the min set to 256MB and no max; physical mem 128MB. i made the multitasking tests monitoring the swap file and it never exceeded the 256MB. Could it be better to decrease the value to the max the system really needs?

When you set the swapfile that size Windows might use that more often than your physical ram. We all know that if your system uses more swapfile than physical ram you sloooooooooooooooooooooooooow dooooooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwnnnnnnnnnnnnnn n big time. Try setting the min & max to just 128Mb & see what that does. I got this friend that had 128Mb of ram & when we set his system to 256Mb of swapfile min & max he was complaining that it felt sluggish so I set it at 128Mb & he said it felt like it was before I changed it. If you set the min & max to the same value then Windows doesn't spend anytime resizing it.

When you set the min size large enough windows also spends no time resizing it. Setting the max too the same size only prevents windows from using more if it ever needs it and windows will just crash in that situation.

My advice would be get a lot of RAM and make the swapfile min and max 64Meg.

I had 128M RAm and a 256M swapfile. I upgraded to 384MB RAM and kept the swapfile. Got an extra 170 3DMarks. put the swapfile down to 64 and got ANOTHER 25 3Dmarks.
