View Full Version : New cooling plan

Ok here in about a week or so I'll be getting some new toys to play with. My idea is to get the thermochill 120.3, a new pump see below, and maybe a Silverprop fusion SL. Now comes the see below part. I'm thinking of either getting two D4s or the 50z. I can get the D4s for $75 a piece or the 50z for $79 a piece. Money isn't an issue but performance is. So out of the two which is the better pump, noise is not an issue either. Almost forgot the pumps will be ran off of a MeanWell S-320. I know the D4 can be ran at 13volts and above but not really sure on the 50z.

anyone?

According to Cather's post over on ProCooling, the 50z would be your best bet if you're going to over volt it, or even if you're not (the 50z is the updated Swiftech MCP600). Take a look at post 182 here: http://forums.procooling.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=10825&page=8&pp=25&highlight=pump+review

What about dual single pass heatercores? Run them in parallel with a single or dual of either of those pumps, and you should be golden. For the gpu, I'd hit up the maze4gpu with the brass top.

get two D4's and keep them at 12v

and a Fusion SL... why? get the HL baby... otherwise check out the new acetal and/or brass topped DD maze4's

Only diff between the the HL and the SL is the height. I ordered all the stuff for my cooling, went with two D4s. Also got the new case to put it all in. So two dual 120mm heatercore would be out of the question.

what case did you get?

sexy.

i assume the 120.3 is going in the top of the case

i just picked up a used U2-UFO 120.3 from mountainmods myself
it'll be enroute sometime this week when they get a new 5.25 bay thingy to put in

Yea it's going up top. Seems I have seen a few watercooled rigs but none have looked good yet. I have it planned out in my head how I wanted it down. So stay tuned as soon as I get it up there will be pics.

Sneaky, the D4s are noisy (even for me, and I live in midtown Manhattan). How anyone can stand two of them???? I had the thing in a test loop in the kitchen/living room (with three kids in college I live in a small one-bedroom apartment) and I had to turn it off so I could get to sleep. I don't even want to think about running more than one, which is why I bought the Iwaki... the high pitched whine of the D4s becomes like someone running their fingernails on a black board where you tense and all your hairs stand on end.

Yea but I'm one who use to run a Delta 80mm 80cfm and a delta 80mm 68cfm plus a ys-tech 120mm 131cfm fan at full blast. Ran the system 24/7 and never bothered me.

Well, maybe I'd have gotten used to it--I don't "hear" the fire trucks leaving the station on 38th like I did when I first moved here. But, even with the high ambient noise level I've got, the D4 wasn't overwhelmed nor did it fade into the background. Maybe I'd have gotten used to it if I had just left it running, but I went and ordered a G5 so I figured I'd need either two D4s or an Iwaki and I chose Iwaki--I'll watercool my Sonata using the D4 and other "spare parts"when I get a chance. Once the new box is built the Sonata becomes the backup machine, which will just sit there and fold unless I manage to kill the main machine.

right now i'm running 2x D4's... in my new case i'll be using 3 of them

the buzzing doesn't bother me much - hell, i can't even hear the buzzing - my case/rad fans drown it out - i can actually hear my POS maxtor 120gb over them

and i used to have 2x 80mm tornados on a BIX-M II radiator in my first WC setup - after that, fan noise hasn't bothered me much at all

plus i'm used to my 2 little brothers making so many random noises and whatnot, i can block out stuff pretty easily... and i play MP3's almost constantly when i have my PC on... so that further drowns it out :p

right now i put my ear up to the full side panel (side closest to pumps) and i can't hear them at all - i actually hear my fans once again, and the water sloshing around in my res a little bit

edit: MVC, i assume you mean a G4 - the G5 downpayments havent even begun yet as far as i know

The downpayments haven't started, but the list of people wanting them has been. At this point money isn't an issue and I'm on the list for a G5. (I've come to watercooling late. I built my first computer in 1978 but I've generally made do with whatever was in front of me, but with my younger daughter in a computer science program at the Sorbonne I figured I'd better update myself :) so now I'm playing, hoping I don't go overboard with the toys.)

didn't know that there was an actual list for it... could you point me towards this?

MVC
02-07-05, 09:30 PM
Don't know about an "actual" list, but Cather in his email to me said I was on it. I assume he's keeping track of ~ how many people are showing interest now, how many he's sure of as buyers, etc. If I remember right, you've got a G4 so if you've said you want a G5 you're probably on the "list" already.

i only have a WW right now... but i already shot him an email a while ago telling him to put me on "the list", but never got a reply back

think i should throw another email his way?

MVC

Can't hurt, just to make sure. I only got my e-mail on <checking>, on Saturday, and I have no idea how many replies he has to make--probably quite a few judging by the "talk" on the this and other forums.

BTW, congratulate me. I just "won" a slightly used Browne & Sharpe Caliper and micrometer on eBay. 'Been wanting one of these for a while (caliper, not necessarily Browne & Sharpe) and now I've got one.
