Dumb Newbie stuff

Hi all - I just joined the Seti project and this group.
I was tryin to find out why my PC takes 14-17hrs to complete a Unit.
As you can see by my sig it should be a tad quicker than that.

I run seti full time in the background and at night it has the whole machine to itself except for Norton AV and Zonealarm.

Anyway - I'll browse the comments and see if I can find a cure - If I can't I'll come back and bug the list for info :)

It sounds like you are running the GUI version of seti....
SETI slows down because of low AR work units, and other stuff running. It seems as though you have everything closed down, before you go to bed, and so other stuff running shouldn't be the problem. I must ask what the screen saver settings are set to. Did you set it to blank at 0 minutes? If not, that would definatly account for a fair increase in times. Also, is the client set to "Always run in background"? It sounded like you do, but I've just gotta make sure.

Like I mentioned, a low angle range WU could also increase times. If you have SETISpy or most any other SETI utility, you should be able to see it. The last thing is you running the GUI. My computer (466 celeron) could churn out a WU every 18 or so hours with the GUI, so that is why I doubt it is your runing the GUI instead of CLC. Get the CLC if you want a descent speed increase.

Thanx Jigpu - I have dumped the GUI version and installed CLC - SETI Driver and SETIspy - the action is visibly quicker.

I had set the GUI version to screen saver on (now off) and it was set to "always run in background"

I'll let you know if its made an improvement

If you try to run two instance of SETI, both of them will be slower than just running one. Just wait for the screensaver to finish the next WU and unistall it.

Have you already checked the SETI Driver-SETI Spy combo?
