I'm trying to overclock my old K6-III 400 CPU... I know that they are to overclock but still. I raise the Vcore to 2.7 and get 450 stable but it wont go over that. I tried 475 with 2.8, and instead of loading windows, it started registry restorer... Should I up the vcore some more? I hear that more than 2.7 is dangerous. The CPU isn't overheating cause it got a large Socket A cooler with 60x25mm fan and a 80mm fan duct blowing cold air onto the 60mm, and when under load by Prime 95 the HS is cool to the touch, and when on idle its COLD, so I don't think that heat will be a problem...
Any idias?

Not really strange, I mean dont get me wrong but its a K6-400, you cannot expect much fro that chip 500+ is pushing it. It could be the ram or the chipset, what of each do you have.

that's about the limit for these chips as the early k6-2 or -3 doesnt overclock well

My bus is at 100 MHz so I don't think its the mem...
But why a higher voltage doesn't work?

After playing around a bit with the K6 series myself I did have pretty good success with a K6III+450 @ 616MHz.
Your memory should be fine, your running it at spec.
You should try to increase the FSB if possible, don't expect to get to 133MHz FSB but you may get as high as 112MHz if the motherboard will support it.
What about your video card and NIC? These, as well as any PCI device, can limit the FSB.
In my experience, one of the first indications of hitting the "CIELING" is registry error.
I also think you're at the max for your voltage. Feel lucky? If you do, then bump it some more. (I wouldn't). Keep in mind that although the system is quickly becoming obsolete, the replacement cost of those CPU’s is rising. Maybe just use it as a backup or run SETI or Fold with it on the side.
If you're so inclined, search back about a month ago in this forum. There was a lot of posting on the K6 series CPU's and a lot of the issues were discussed.
Good Luck!

OK Thanks.
My mobo doesn't support this FSB option :( that isn't too good... maybe I could get out of it 455 or 465? LOL
I think I wont go any further with it cause I got registry errors on 2.8Vcore and on 475 @ 2.7Vcore.
I'm pretty happy with it @ 450 cause its not heating at all. on full load the HS is baraly warm.
