R.I.P

AMD Athlon 1.0 Ghz

I had just installed my new coolmaster SK6, it cooled off nicely, but the guy in the PC store that removed the thermal paste that was on before smeared it all over the CPU. I've heard that this doesnt matter but apparently it does if it's arctic silver (dunno what my former paste was, now i'm using ACII).

I got home, and started my comp.
It worked for 10 seconds, then froze at the windows screen.
I shut it off, and turned it on again
all the cooler started up, but the CPU did not. nothing happened.
it is now officially dead, by reasons unknown (maybe it was the smeared cooling paste?) .. because the Sk6 works fine.

:(

Time to install my 1.4 Ghz.

well at least u are lucky enough 2 have a athlon 1.4ghz...
it may well be the thermal compound
becux as i know, those stuff conduct electricity and they might have short circuited ur cpu
don't know
thtz the only reason i came up with

I would clean off the thermal paste and try and RMA that sucker.

Return Material Authorization. Some places will let you replace the bad part. You usually have to contact them to get an RMA number, then ship it to them, and get one shipped back.

could be the thermal paste, although the makers of as and asII swear blind it doesn't conduct elec. i'd go back to the guy at your pc store and kick his a$$! well, i'd tell him to be more careful, anyway.... ;) :p

i have never killed a cpu but man its cool that you got the 1.4 to back it up. was the damage heat related?

Well thanks for the tip!

I actually think my CPU still lives.. it has no visible signs of burns or whatever. However, I have to get it back from the f00s at the PC store :/
