I'm just curious if ther are any reasons you wouldn't "cache" 30,60, or even more wu's, just in case SETI was down for days?

There is nothing negative with caching that many work units. I only do that when I am going to be away from my house. But now since I am in a dorm with an active line I just store between 5-10. It is not like Seti@home is just having you do that unit. Plus Seti@home does not delete that unit from the server till it has recieved enough results for that unit. Then it gets permentally deleted. So there is no real negative side from caching that many...unless they are all .001 work units. Then I think you won't like that.

I guess I just wondered why more people didn't cache up loads so that when there are problems, there are no worries. If you've got 100 cached, then it wouldn't matter if berkley was down for days... right?
For those of us with dial-up it takes a few minutes to upload a WU...i keep my cache at 5...but it takes me a little over 8 hours to crunch an average WU
I cant imagine having to upload 100WU's....it would take a day:p

The only thing i can come up with that would be bad about caching, is getting a bunch of bad wu's, but thats it...
I have all my seti crunchers cached, its a great safty net for when seti's servers go down but we all know that never happens.

i usually had all of my machines cached for 'bout 2 days worth of the wu's just in case i don't have time to upload them or the seti server is down. but more than 3-4 days worth of wu's, i don't think the server will be down for that many days........i assume?!!

i cache 5 on my two machines...that'll last me about a day and a quarter
As long as you don't have more than about a weeks worth of WUs stacked up, its fine. When you have that many, SETI sends out the same WU to someone else because they figure the WU you have cached is lost. Stay under a week and you should be fine.

Now that is a good reason, thanks Jigpu. I've got 60 cached on each machine, but now I've changed the "desired cache size" back to 25. I certainly don't want anyone else to have to crunch the same thing!
