I have a 19 inch sony lcd. It's default is set to 60 hz, but I hear that a lot of people raise thier refresh rates anyway. Is this safe to do, or is it likely that something will burn out?

It's safe to do this, but only to the specs posted by the LCD manufacturer. I've had 2 LCDs that didn't automatically display the entire list of possible refresh rates, and as a result running native resolution at 60hz looked a tad fuzzy (even the desktop).

What I did was found the detailed specs for the LCD, which usually lists the native resolution @ a particular refresh rate frequency (probably 70-75hz), then go into the display properties, into settings-->advanced-->monitor, and uncheck the box "Hide modes this monitor can't display". This will make all refresh rates available.

I'm uspecting this is a plug/play driver issue. I know in one case there was a driver release via windows update for the particular monitor and that corrected the problem.

OK, cool, I looked it up on the website, and it does say a max of 75 hz. Thanks.

Ok, Im back again with another question, if my max. supported refresh rate is 75 hz, then can I overclock my monitor to about 85hz and be reasonably safe? Has anybody else done this.

i thought lcd refresh rates didn't matter

Is this using D-Sub or DVI? I think DVI only does 60hz, but I'm not sure.

on the L90D+, DVI only does 60hz at any res
with D-Sub, it does 60 or 75 hz @ 1280x1024, @ 1024x768 it does 60 or 70 hz

I think the last poster was talking about some sony.

btw, I quickly tested 75hz with my DVI connection....it worked.
I wonder how safe this is?

Good question, because there's a noticeable gain in using 75mhz with my DVI connection. The video card control panel lists the refresh at 60hz, but there's a definite improvement when going from 60 to 70 to 75mhz. I'm not techie enough to explain WHY this is, but if the monitor can display with these settings then it's 'handling it' just fine. I wouldn't personally go past the manufacturer specifications though, at least until we get someone in here who knows why this is the case.

I don't know what my protocol is, It is just a standard video port as far as I know.
