Where is the log when a system failure occurs?

I am getting frequent system crashes when using devices that access certain audio or video components. For instance my setup is fine playing games(halfLife:CounterStrike) but crashes when I try and play some MP3s with Winamp. I would like to know exactly what happened before it crashed. I think it is calling on certain audio codecs and that is what is causing the crash but not sure! Thanks.

It keeps them in %SystemRoot%\*.dmp (where * is the dump type you set up). But I'll tell you now, it won't tell you anything. Its just all jibberish characters.

Some other places to look for info on crashes is the event viewer or the dr watson logs in documents snd settings\all users\my documents\dr watson
