I have a 9600xt vivo with the stock cooler. It OC's up to 570/390, with minimal artifacts. I put a big fan beside it, and it goes up t 580/405. Now, do you guys think some new thermal compound could help lower the temp? the overdrive tab shows like 60 deg. at startup, so I think it could help lower the core temp. I will do the fan thing again today, shooting for 590/420  .

Ran with fan today at 580/420, got 4157 3d marks. Need a better CPU... And a question, how do you remove the heatsink (mine seems to have this thing that you can squeeze so you can slide it out).

verycarefuly man dont use brute force use baby force never ever use a knife to pry it off. heres the best way to get the sink off use the card till it get nice and warm then shutoff the computer and very very very carefuly take the sink off and then get some rubbin alcohol pads and clean off all the goo and replace it with some new goo then let the goo break in for id say about a few days maybe even a week

pop the little pin out, and twist the heatsink lightly, lightly, and keep twisting until it comes off (they use thermal tape, so it's hard to get off) but twist lightly, you beat me by 1000 points in 3D mark 03, nice :)

Damn I wish the Ram on my 9600xt would go that high

Ok, the thing is that it's kind of the "extreme" cooler, will post a pic, and describe what holds it together. I did 590/420 once, but it locked up. Did 580/450(900mhz)once, and there were crazy artifacts all over the screen (didn't lock), and in some tests performance was lower than with 420 for example, but I stopped for the sake of the RAM. I would love to test this baby on an A64 platform to see what I get. With some new goo in there I think I could get a very nice temp. drop.

my 9600xt locks up at around 535/335....

It also doesn't have the thermal probe and doesn't support overdrive. Sapphire sold it before ATi released drivers for overdrive on the 9600xt, so they made a crappy version of the card and sold it to unsuspecting people like me, while all the ones they sent for review had the thermal probe and went much faster.

OK i'll order new thermal goo in a bit, so I can push my baby farther. Maybe I'll mount a fan on top of the PCI sound card for extra cooling as well.
