I want to cool my new GF3 card. Which would be the best route. Going with a slot cooler like the Globalwin CAF-12 or to go with a Blue Orb type solution? Someone mentioned a Vice III HS fan combo to me also on another site. Feel free to post here or send me an e-mail. I appreciate all info since I am new to this OC stuff.

Check out this thread (http://forums.overclockers.ws/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=36067). it should answer some of your questions.

Replace the HS with a Piii Stock Heatsink but that will cause u to lose 2 to 3 pci slots

Go to http://www.millisec.com and get one of these. My O/Cs to 270/600. BTW, You don't have to attach like mine. I just did that because of the peltier. Whatever you decide to get make sure you lap the core down to the copper for a good overclock.:)

Do both, go with a better GPU cooler and use a slot cooler. If you can only do one mod, then the vid card cooler is more critical. In many cases a Blorb will work good. If plan on doing extreme video overclocking, better go with a heavy duty cooler. Lots of people are reporting good luck using the Alpha PAL15 cooler. Heck, for those on a tight budget, just lapping the factory sink and reinstalling using Arctic Silver will help a lot, especially if you're using a $10 slot fan next to it to get rid of the heat build up around the vid card.

I checked into the Alpha PAL-15U and only about 2 places can get it. I did go to 1 Cool PC and asked Bart a few questions. He has a custom Alpha HS that's only 40X40X20 for $11.00 called the Mighty Mite & the Mega Mite is only 45X45X30 for $13.00 they both have Sunon fans on them. He also carries a 120mm slot cooler that pumps out 131.5 CFM Holy Bat Choppers Batman :-)
I may go with one of his heatsink combos. you have to use adhesive since there's no connectors that come with them.
If I get it I'll let ya know how it works out. Thanks for all the info.

let us know how it goes, I'm curious to know if those heatsinks are any good.

I found the blorb to be great for my herc profit 2 gts, I'm able to get 215/425 now. I don't have a thermal probe for temps or anything but I never see a flicker.

I'm wondering if anyone has tried the mega mite, I also seen another chip cooler that it supposed to be awesome "I can't think of the name right now"

Plus the blorb fits right on your cards, no extra mods needed

Hey, Hyperfish! Good to hear from ya buddy! I was wondering when I would run across you. Hey, you've got some great scores too!:) BTW,trying that pelt on there turned out to be a DUD! It o/c ed more without it. But now I've got waterblock on it and it's cold as hell! Hopefully I can start breaking my old scores soon. Thanks for the nice words, Hyperfish.:) Take it easy!

I'm running my Gainward GeForce3 with the stock HS/Fan, and get great results at 250/575. Will getting better cooling really help??

TIA,

Doctor

HeHe, Thanks Doc, greet to finally meet you also.

Weird on the Pelt, nice job on H2o.

I kinda figured you were running that card hard when you smoked my scores a few months ago & never looked back! :)

Both of these boxes are used heavily daily for both business & play, 24/7, so I'm reluctant to do anything radical to 'em.

The P4 box has a SCSI card blocking the use of any larger HSF or chipset sinks, also...

Wonder what's up with Mad O, haven't been able to get to the site since last night.

Anyway, congrats again, if I end up building another box just to play I"m gonna blame you! :)

Doctor-

That's a pretty impressive card if you're running stock voltage, beats the hell out of my Gainward BIG time.

Ask DocLiv, he's obviously got the experience & scores to back it, but I would think 250/575 has got to be getting somewhat close to the edge...

I guess the question(s) would be:

1. How much do you want to spend?

2. Do you really want to risk that card?

3. Do YOU feel the risk outweighs the potential gain?

250/575!??!! That sounds pretty impossible, you must be getting a huge amount of artifacts in the demos, otherwise it's just not fair, damnit!

Doc,

Thats a sweeeet setup :p

Why dont you slap a AlphaPal 15u to that great card you have, maybe you can squeeze out a few more mhz out of it. If nothing else you will be able to cool it down better than the factory HSF.

You spent a pretty penny for that fine setup, whats $28 more dollars to slap on the finest GPU heatsink made?

My GF2 Ultra can run with no artifacts at up to 340/550 and its never hit 38*c (but I run it at 300/ 525 just because overclocking the bejeebers out of the core is foolish, but the fine thing about the Alpha Pal 15u mod is that the Alpha fan also cools down the Ramsinks, to thr point that you can barely even feel any heat if you touch them when Im benchmarking.

ps SWEET 3dmark score! just goes to show you that not all video cards are created equal, looks like you got a nice part of the wafer.

OK. Now you have me interested in the Alpha Pal 15. I saw one listed as the Alpha Pal-15U at CoolerGuys. Now I see a "New Version" of the Alpha called the New Alpha FC-Pal 15 the only difference seems to be a tad bit more compact & the CFM's are 17 on the new version and 21.19 on the old version. Does anybody know about this? Would the new version at 17cfm's be ok?

I bought mine from Coolerguys.com and they are still sellling the 21cfm version and it fits perfect

I though it was weird too!

BTW, No artifacts until I go to 580mhz.

Thanks for the kind words!

I will order an Alpha today, and post my results later.

Thanks again,
