Slow cd/dvd access

I am having a real problem accessing data on my cd-rom drive and my Daemon virtual drive. When I right-click either drive and hit explore it takes like 1 minute before the files show up in the explorer window. What could be causing this?

Bad cable on the Virtual Drive ;-)

I wonder if this isn't another Roxio problem or too many different burning apps. How many burning apps do you have installed.

Zero. I just installed Windows. Daemon tools was the first thing I installed. I have recently discovered that Daemon tools has some issues with XP SP2, but that does not explain why my DVD-rom is slow also. It takes like 30 seconds for the explorer window to pop up. Sometimes it freezes all together. I will test the cable later. If it is the cable, that would be the third rounded cable over the last few years that has gone out on me. Flat ribbon cables for me from now on.

check ur cds for ne dirt or scratches, this could cause the dvd rom to take a long time to access the disk. also try a lens cleaner in the drive as teh lens could be dirty

use nero cd/dvd speed test to test the eject/load time and post a pic. my drive does take 30 seconds and only 4seconds of that is eject/insert.

hmmmm. It only took 16 seconds in total. I guess it didn't like that particular disk that I had in the drive. I have had the same problem with a few different disks though. I have never actually used a lens cleaner on any optical device. Do the lenses really get that dirty that it impairs their functionality?

1- clean the lens with a lens cleaner
2- NEVER use rounded cables lol.. ive tried 3 and none of them worked probably.. they always cause different kinds of trouble.. g/l

ive never had a problem with rounded cables

just dont use cheap pos ones

Another thing to check is Windows XP has a funny way of Changing your DMA access mode to PIO if it has a hard time reading a disk.
If that happens, just uninstall it in the Device manager then reboot and it should be ok then and back to DMA mode.

yeah and sometimes after an overclock you reset the bios and defaults to PIO not dma!! LMAO
