It's evolution. Microsoft is dying. They cannot maintain their stranglehold on the desktop/server market when their products are so shoddy and insecure. Someone will become bigger and better...at least for a while...and then they'll die too. It's the "circle of life" man!

MS isn't going anywhere. That is just wishful thinking. :)

The only reason that windows seems to be vulnrable to viruses is because it is used by most every one that owns a computer. If Linux were on top they would appear just as vulnerable.

Thank you! It's about time someone else realized this. Why in god's name, if you are a virus writter and your whole intent is to bring down a crap load of systems, would you write a virus for Linux/Unix/Mac's that only take up 10% of the worlds computer population??!?!

You write a virus for the system used by the most, and that is Microsoft.

unless you work for microsoft and you are secretly creating linux virus's to eliminate the competition.

actually one of the IIS hacks has a patch out for it before Nimbda/Code Red was released, you can't really blame them for the failure of a sys admin to updated his security files.

Naw, you can't just drop a visual basic file on a Linux system and cripple it the way you can with Windoze, so Linux will never be as vulnerable in that respect, and ya, the biggest virii problems facing Windoze users are spread by vb files.. The basic design concepts behind any *nix system ensure that *nix systems will never be as vulnerable to attacks as a Windoze system. But, we'll not bother to get into that.

As for braindead types (no, nothing intended towards you in any way) who just can't seem to grasp the concept of "don't open email attachments from people you don't know or for that matter having been made aware it was even sent to you", well I don't care what they are running for an OS, a trojan is a trojan and it's gonna get 'em everytime. And that's where the difference in design between a dos based versus *nix based system becomes evident. With a Windoze system a virus can take out the whole system regardless of who may be using it, and in a *nix system only superuser has that kind of privledge. I'd have to say that most if not _all_ *nix users tend to stay very much up to date with security concerns just by nature of who we are.

My biggest problem with Windoze users is that they simply take their shiny new computer home, hook it into the internet and become repeaters for every worm/virus or trojan that comes along, all the while completely ignorant to the issue(s) involved. And then they wonder why people like me get ticked off at suffering 500K per day in log file entries on my web server that they help to create.

I've recently seen letters going around from corporate big shots who are finally getting the idea and saying NO MORE to Windoze based web servers and insisting that a change be made to apache or whatever else until such time Microsoft fixes the problems and can prove it. Bottom line, it's costing them too much money to keep patching systems the way they are.
Microsoft has long known of these types of vulnerablities and chose not to do anything about it. Personally, I think it's high time that all of the sheep of the computer world wake up and take notice to how badly they are being hosed by Microscrew.
<Rant off>

--- I may not agree with what you have to say, but by god, I'll fight to the death to defend your right to say it!!

What sys admin?? Nimda will attack *any* system using Windoze Personal Web server. (Don't hold your breath waiting for Bill's phone call to tell you about it either.)

Are you referring to personal systems or servers in that percentage ?? If you're talking servers, I'd be willing to bet you're out of touch with reality.

But you do make a heck of a good point... Which reminds me, I have to go help a buddy delete Windoze and install Linux tomorrow, better get to bed..

You don't really think Bill would stoop that low do ya ?? Come to think of it, somebody in the US gov't. is talking about forcing all computer users to use only software that is proven secure and has security clearance from some yet to be formed government agency. I wonder who's behind that.. hmm. Better yet, I wonder what Microsoft is going to do?
