Hi mates!
Well I would like to buy a new HD after my IBM sucker died and took years of my life with it :(
I can buy

Hitachi
Seagate Barracuda
Western Digital

all 250Gig all 8MB buffer.. so which one would you choose? Fastest and not so eager to die on me :(

SATA or PATA ??

if your going SATA then you want a Maxtor DM10 with 16mb cache
if PATA then seagate has 5 year warranties

/edit fixed PAPA to PATA

I like either Maxtor or Western Digital, never had a problem with a Maxtor drive, and only had one problem with WDs drives, but was corrected by doing a low level format.

I got the hitachi 250gb SATA drive and love it. it's suipposed to have the fastest seek times and mines the quietest drive i've ever had (had maxtors and WD's before too)

To make your Hard drives last as long as possible, make sure you don't move your computer around when it is on, and keep the drives as cool as reasonably possible. I have not had a HD die in over 4 years. I have 10-14 running 24/7.

10 years ago when I would work on my computer I would just slide it out to look at something and slide it back in while it was running or tip it forward so I could plug something in the back of it.
My HDs were lasting 6 months to 2 years. Maybe they weren't built as well back then, but I think my handling had a lot to do with it.

i love my WD drives, have over 1 terrabyte of WD drives some are almost 4 years old and still running 24/7 strong!

Seagate or WD are good choices. Make sure you buy a 7200 RPM, 8mb Cache hard drive, from either of these brands and you'll be just fine!

I have always had western digital, they have done well, although i did lose a couple during an electrical brownout, that is no fault of the drive. I'm think about trying a seagate just for the great warranty.

Its 6 of one, half a dozen of the other, and... ...6 of the other...

Anyways, I think all in all they're pretty much the same. You could get a lemon from anyone.

I just bought a bunch of Seagate 7200.7s and am happy with them. Very quiet.

WDs seem to be quieter than Maxtors in my experience... I use both.

If you want SATA, get a Raptor! ;)

I use both Maxtor and WD, but latly I've had too many WDs failing. (ones out for RMA right now) From now on I'm sticking to Maxtor and thinking about trying out Seagate.

IMO, WD HDD's blow. I've hear all the time about them dying. Im a fan of Seagate.

i've had 3 WD for quite a while (still do) and never had a problem with them. If u're getting a WD go with the JB models. They are the quitest. Before i went to WD's side i used to have maxtor. The maxtor drive worked fine for a bit and died on me. sent it out for a replacement, the new one died in about a month (started) making a clicking noise. Replaced that one and it died too. Maybe i didn't have great luck with maxtor but i know im not going back to it. The only reason why i would pick seagate is because of their 5 year warranty.
