missing My Computer icon/shell

Ok basically i am missing the My Computer icon on the desktop(yes i went into customize desktop) and i am missing the My Computer when i click to install some software somehwhere or click the browse to save something, it only shows My Documents, My Network, etc... I am logged in as Administrator and have been messing with the tweaking on my Windows settings (msconfig, which i really shouldn't have.) Help would be appreciated, Thank You.
I am a new member and have a lot of computers to setup over the next couple months, so hello.

Another thing is that in the start menu the My Computer icon is there so i have to make a link on my desktop to it, but when when i browse for it the My Computer link from the start menu will not show.

if you have my computer in the start menu it sounds like defailt XP taskbar, if you go to taskbar and start meny properties is it in "classic start menu", or the top "start menu" ?

Sorry to bump this up but if anybody has a fix for this, there's a free fandango.com movie pass for you.

Right click your start button and hit properties. Then click "Classic start menu". Should fix it, because you are using the default xp start menu.

When you hit start+E what happens?

No, still does not bring it back to the desktop or the browse section.

Hitting Start+E brings up My Computer but doesnt solve the problem of loading it in the browse and desktop window.

Do you have Norton System Works 2005 installed?...if so, check to make sure the "Hide My Computer" box isn't ticked. You could also try running the VB script available from the following site...

If you have XP Pro installed, you could also check the following setting using the Group Policy Editor...Start | Run | Type gpedit.msc, and click OK | Expand the following branch:

Local Computer Policy | User Configuration | Administrative Templates | Desktop

Highligh "Desktop" in the LH pane | Right click "Remove My Computer icon on the desktop", and select "Properties" | Click the "Disabled" radio button, and click OK.

This setting hides My Computer from the desktop and from the new Start menu. It also hides links to My Computer in the Web view of all Explorer windows, and it hides My Computer in the Explorer folder tree pane. If the user navigates into My Computer via the "Up" button while this setting is enabled, they view an empty My Computer folder. This setting allows administrators to restrict their users from seeing My Computer in the shell namespace, allowing them to present their users with a simpler desktop environment.

If you enable this setting, My Computer is hidden on the desktop, the new Start menu, the Explorer folder tree pane, and the Explorer Web views. If the user manages to navigate to My Computer, the folder will be empty.
