I’m wondering if I can use Western Digital's Normal drive troubleshooting utility to look at my WD that seems to have trouble ever now and then (I just came home from leaving my system on while I was gone, was in the bios saying boot disk failure... Again (round two of that)) without fear of it killing my info, has anybody here worked with WD's tool set?

Yes use it. It will tell you if there are bad sectors and other things that could mean a bad drive. Do not low level format or write 1 and 0's if you do not want to wipe your drive. It might give that option if it finds bad sectors.

either one. the extended test is better and doesn't take that long.
