Made it work (once with Mandrake 8) but I don't remember how ! That was before I had to take it off again !

It can be done, yes. I'm not sure how tho'

Is it USB or PS/2?

It is a PS/2 Microsoft wheel mouse.

It can be done by editing your /etc/X11/XF86Config file (using mcedit or an editor of your choice) -

under the Pointer section should read -

Section "InputDevice"

Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
# Option "Emulate3Buttons"
# Option "Emulate3Timeout" "50"

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hope this helps :)

--EDIT--

Mandrake 8 uses the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file rather than XF86Config. Not sure about RedHat.

I am running SuSE 7.2 and when you install it if there is a wheel mouse hooked up it is automatically configured! What is really cool is it even works to change weapons when I play Q3A and Unreal Tourney :D

I had the wheel mouse working in Mandrake a while back but the mouse was messed up when it came to Q3A so I went back to a standard mouse. I used Mandrakes GUI configuration tools to make the change.

If you haven't used SuSE it might be worth giving it a try. I find it to be less betaish then Mandrake which would be my second choice distro.
