i have outa it for the last week or more since the atack on NYC ....i just read that AMD is going to call the Athlon IV AthlonXP(can somebody say sucking up to microsoft) amd doesnt need to suck up to anybody...intel should since they keep producing bad products that need some major work befour they come out. athlon XP has to be the most lamest name for a processor hopefully they find out what kinda stupid mistake that is and change it back..... also winXP is goign to be bad...i will never budge from my win98se if i do its to linux...i just dont trust ms anymore...
my 2 cents i think bush snubbed us Canadians in his address to teh nation....he could mention the few ppl in like korea that morned but the 100,000 ppl in Ottawa on parliment hilll that morned on friday and everthing else we did...he never achnoldged...only i belive soembody from the senate said thanks...its kinda odd how great britian is the best friend now....lol
i just wana see what kinda intrest this sparks up:)
Yeah AthlonXP is a lame duck of a name.
Hey chill Gunrock, Bush can't mention every nation is his short speech. He tried to pick different countries from each corners of the globe. Plus, Canada has always been the forgotten nation, why break the habbit, heh heh.

AMD is one mighty fine company -
just LOOK at the prices - never have these powerful CPUs been so dirt cheap.

i never knew Athlon XP is named after WindowsXP
A forgoten nation? Is that right?
thanks for the tip there buddy.
I personally think that Canada was not mentioned because it took Canada a few days to back Bush in the anti terror campain.
Bush did not mention Canada for specific reasons. You might have noticed that Jean Chretien was not present either.
Anyhow, now is not a time for silly nit picking. The US will need all its Allied friends to help fight this war on terror and Canada will be there to help. As we have always been.

well i personaly belive if this war on terrorism fails..... the US has been known as a war country and Canada as a peacekeeper... that might put us in the targeting range for some attacks...well with teh cpu...i think its on the overclockers main news part of the page....where i saw it..there is a link.. check it out..amd is a great company but this is one stupid move to suck up to ms... if anything the whole PR raiting is for the Intel Pentium4...thats why if u call Athlon4...it looks moreto the comparision of te p4 and with pr raiting it will kick some but with those ppl that dont research processors befour they buy.......... XP is pulling away from the p4 aproach...they should just scrap the pr raiting if there going to call it athlonXP....and if they call it Athlon IV(4) pr raiting is a good idea.... if there tring to win over the ppl that are buying on MHZ and names for ex...what would u buy PII 450 or PIII 450 the name part of the product realy helps out...u want a 1.4 athlon or 1.5athlon4 ...it just has that kinda ring to it that makes it look better then athlonXP (what does the XP stand for):)
Personally I could care less what it's called as long as it's a good product. What difference does it make?
What will be sad is when they stop using MHz to identify the chips but a product code that looks like MHz rating.

i think for PR raiting....is a good idea but they should let programs like WCPUID tell the real deal of the mhz...ppl that buy on mhz 1 arnt overclockers 2 have no idea that there is a program that can tell the cpu speed in windows...so why would they bother downloading it....so why block us smart ppl that like to push there cpus to the limit.... stop us from knowing what we overclock too.... make it easy so we dont have to figure it out ourselfs hehe

Maybe and maybe not, who knows.... in 40 years we might have computers that overclocking even 1gHz will be like losing a hair from your head. (Assuming you've got pletny of it)

well .. if thats what its named after, then yeah.. i suppose its a bit of a sucks act.. but fact is, if its a good product an (as always) out performs intel.. ill be happy no matter what its called..
as for win xp.. well.. im running win xp pro corporate edition right now.. and im telling ya .. ya dont know what your missing.. bsod's are almost a thing of the past.. its very easy to use an setup.. and im a critic.. so believe me i was as surprised as anyone i suppose.. and no i dont greatly trust ms either.. but then im a hmm middle of the range errr 'hacker' perhaps.. so i know what my ports are doing.. and YES.. i did find a couple of hidden accounts on the system.. but this is easily corrected.. :)
command prompt... type 'NET USER'
and you see all accounts... there will be a couple that shouldnt be there.. one is 'HelpAssistant' and the other is 'Support_%$#&%' - random numbers there as far as i can tell.. but again, easily solved.. type 'NET USER HelpAssistant /active:no'
and accounts disabled.. simple as that.. same for the others.. and you can rename the default 'Administrator' account also, as with other NT/2k systems.
this is the first version of windows that ive come accross (used them all) where networking has actually become quite easy.. and trouble free.. for instance, i run small lan here, with this machine as the 'gateway' through my little 56k.. other machines were 98 (since converted to xp), and all i had to do, was tell it to allow ICS (internet connection sharing) without letting the other machines controlling it, it told me it needed to change my ethernet address to the usual ics addy, 192.168.0.1 an this is did, all without needing a single reboot.. the 98 machine was set to disable WINS, DNS, no DHCP, but auto assigned ip (xp machine will provide that when the 98 machine reboots)..
98 machine rebooted, an was able to connect immediately.. also, since protocols on XP are on a per connection basis, instead of system wide, you can now have netbios fileshare enabled to 98 systems etc that need port 139 on your local network, but not have it enabled to the outside world via your modem.. an therin lies the probelm when i used to run 98 as the gateway... because you could not disable netbios over tcp, both the LAN address, and Internet address were using a port 139... occasionally it would get 'consfused' in my opinion, and since it cannot disable the lan outright, it simply cuts the modem.. experienced alot of disconnections like that.. xp has no such sufferences.. and its firewall, although not as full featured as id like, does protect it welll.. ive set it up to allow all outgoing icmps, but no incoming, had it tested at grc.com first, and they reported no ports visible.. but ok thats not enough of a test for me.. so i got local friends in the area that i trust to scan it... and ZERO ports found.. no ping reply.. nothing.. this beastly is good.. :) :) :)
forget about some of your old games though, not so bad if your an owner of a geforce 2 or 3 based card.. but had trouble with some games on my voodoo 3 3000.. for anyone else using voodoo's, on xp.. use an NT 4 driver instead an you will find better results for glide based stuff there..
so yeah.. to end it all.. if AMD are naming there new processor after Windows XP ... you might wanna look into exactly why.. cause honestly, yeah ok it sounds like a bit of a suck act.. but the OS itself is pretty damn good.. ive had no qualms about saying goodbye to Win 98SE (sh%t edition) forever!!.. an even i didnt think that was possible.. as i said, im a critic to.. not this time.. xp wins hands down. :)
Incidentally, at the end of this huge post, just like to ask, does anyone know what this XP athlons speed is likely to be seen at ?.. like start of the range ?

I have to say iīm a bit sceptic to the athlon xp processor formerly known as palomino. When did we hear about the release of the palomino?...long time ago. The expectations have been high but later on they were not really answered, to be honest.
I get the feeling that the athlon xp feels old even if it hasnīt been released. But it is nice to have something between the t-bird and the upcoming hammer.

i agree with you but i guess that us overclockers will still be calling the cpu by the core name palomino....

GuNRocK,
Don't feel snubbed because Bush didn't mention Canada in his speech. He probably couldn't pronounce the name of your PM ;) . I saw the broadcast from Ottawa, when I was stuck in Detroit, and it was quite touching. Most Americans are smart enough to know that Canada is one of our few true friends. IMHO, I love traveling to Canada. It's a beautiful country and the people are friendly and genuine. Vancouver is one of my favorite cities in the world.
As for AMD, they have only done right by me. They replaced a flawed OEM Athlon chip with a higher GHz chip, with no hassles. They have also sent me free case stickers. So far they have a very happy customer. If they want to name their new chip "Elephant patty #4", I couldn't care less if it performed as well as their previous chips.
Cheers.

Read somewhere that the AlthonXP has nothing to do with MS. It actually signifies Xtra Performance
I think I read it in a email I get just dunno which one...

either way, xtra performance, or to do with MS, i dont think either is insulting.. as the others said, so long as it performs.. who cares what its called :)

lol, now that's funny
but i thnk AMD should get itself a quote....maybe AMD inside?

i just hope AMD dont do an Intel.... pentium 42174 anyone?
Athlon XP is a crap name.... athlon 4 was still bad.... i reckon they should keep the codename as the official name of the chip.....

that was a good idea...what happend with teh Tbird? in the beginning was it called socketA athlon or did they call it Thunder bird right from the start i dont rember....i was into the Durons at the time hehe.....
earthdick thx for the support from south of the border hehe....but its kinda funny becuase they have like 10-15 ppl that read over the speaches to make sure everthing sounds good and is correct its kinda funny how this happend...and we all know that bush doesnt like canada very much... bill clinton would have had canada up first he liked canada from what i rember hehe.:D

I dont think names or codes matter for choosing an MPU. As long as it meets our requirements and gives better performance... who cares?

u guys shouldbn't be saying bad things about windows xp. i too am using xp pro corporate edition. and believe me its amazing. i love the look and feel and ease of use and the way everything is intergrated together. i got everything set up without any hitches and even all the drivers where installed smoothly. it did it in the background and never went into safe mode for any conflicts. i bet u guys are going to really enjoy playing with xp and all its potentials.

well.. nothing to be upset about, i just believe in the sayin 'dont knock it till ya try it' .. i think most people here, are just knockin something they know stuff all about, simply because its 'cool' to pick an easy target like microsoft.. sure they have had a lot of problems, but then people havent tried to flaw something like linux as much have they.. maybe because its free ??.. think about it.. try xp.. id be surprised if you still after trying it, are knocking microsoft quite as much as you once did.

I AGREE. THE NAME IS NOT IMPORTANT. WHAT IS IMPORTANT IS CONTINUING TO SMASH INTEL. AMD NEEDS TO GET BACK TO TOP DOG STATUS AS FAR AS FLAG SHIP PERFORMANCE IS CONCERENED. THAT ALONG SIDE SOME (ANY) PR WOULD GIVE THEM SOME WELL NEEDED $$$$ AFTER INTEL HAS PUT THE SQUEEZ ON EM. THE MORE MONEY AMD GETS THE BETTER FUTURE PRODUCTES CAN BE. BUT IF NOTHING ELSE....GET SOME PR IE. LITTLE GREEN AMD GUYS RUNNING AROUND CUZ THATS WHAT SELLS! DO SOMTHING! REMEMBER IF AMD FAILS WE WILL BE AT THE MERCY OF INTEL ONCE AGAIN.

AMD is really doing well, cutting on intel's market share the past quarter... now, if only AMD can bring the temps down... ( Still having fun watching the video from Tom's bout the burne athlon ):D :D :D
