I want to upgrade to a 6800GT. I have a 9600xt right now. I just want to know which 6800GT is the best overall. I want to be able to OC so cooling must be good. Which brand do you guys recommend? Oh and it must be AGP. Thanks.

I hear the bfg makes a really good OC'r. XFX i believe isn't the greatest.

I was looking at the eVGA one mainly due to a high number of customer reviews and they were overall high ratings, but there was a few that said the cooling was too good on that card and most of the review had installed aftermarket coolers, which I don't want to do. What I am wondering is do most users here that have a 6800gt go with aftermarket coolers and still get decent OC results?

I haven't seen any 6800gt cards overclocked (so I won't comment here)... but they all sound a bit loud at stock, which is my main concern.

I was looking at the Leadtek, since I've heard its relatively silent. Any comments on a QUIET card?

From everything I have read, the gainward dual fan cooler is actually worse than the reference design.

check out my avatar. this is my card. dual fan, copper heatsink best stock cooling i have seen yet. see if you can find this card from BFG, i havent seen too many. check sig for overclocked speeds. also max load temps have never raised past 67. i just put AS5 on the core, so we will see how it turns out.

Owning the gainward card myself, I will tell you that it's cooling solution is a bit sub par compared to the refrence coolers, mainly due to the fact that while it has 2 fans the 2 fans are nowhere near the core and thus doesnt pass much air over the copper gpu sink. Also I cannot even o/c my card to the speeds gainward gauruntees it to hit, this I am not sure atm if it is a bum card or if my 431w psu isn't providing enough power to run the card at ultra speeds. And seeing as gainward is no longer a company avoid the gainward card at all costs.

I think the dual fan cooler you talk about is from the early releases BFG 6800 GTs.

i only put the nv silencer5 on my pny 6800gt because of its wisper quiet operation, and it took my temps down 5c at idle and 10c at load. best 25 bucks i ever spent. but dont forget to use arctic silver5.

my highest overclock was 445/1220 and a 3dmark03 score of 13,239

i keep the card @420/1150 though

the card is a AGP BFG 6800GT OC GDDR3 256. this card is great. comes oc to 370/1000. great cooling, temps never reached past 67 with current overclock (check sig) idle @ 51 right now, but dropping due to AS5 break in period. now with my AS5 on the core, temps have dropped on full load to 63 from 67 which is great, hoping for more. i got it about month and half ago. i got it at local future shop believe it or not, but i didnt exactly pay for it full price....if u know what i mean... :attn:

but the retail price @ futureshop here in canada, ontario is $649 canadian. they are the only ones i can see who carries this kind of cooler. i cant find this cooler anywhere else. everywhere else has the new ultra cooler on it from BFG. i think they stopped making these cards with those coolers.. if you find one, man pick it up, they are great.

I'd start at 400/1100.

Oh, I'd go BFG just because they back their product better than anyone.

On a related note, would the BFG 6800GT be the choice for pci-e as well? If I have to order online to get it I will, or will the XFX or MSI 6800GT suffice?

P.S. suffice = O/C like a mother!

Kenshiro
02-25-05, 09:13 AM
I won't recommend XFX because I think some of the owners here don't get a good o/c out of it. MSI should be pretty good too. I think it came stock with copper heatsink. MSI comes with a very good software package too.

Choose between the MSI and BFG.

I have absolutely no problems with my Gainward 6800 GT Golden Sample. My card stays cool at 45C core/ 30C PCB when idle at 350/1000. This video card IMHO performs better than some "others" 6800GT. Gainward warranty includes Ultra speeds (400/1100). The dual fans works great and the LED lights (2 of them) brightens under load. This is the best AGP video card I ever own. I have owned the ATI 9600 PRO and ATI AIW 9800 Pro. I speak from experience here, get the Gainward if you can find them.

My BFG is 47C Core when set to the card's default setting of 370/1000. I've never even come close to overheating the core and I've gone as far as an OC of 436/1148 and only hitting 33-34C. BFG has really got their stuff together in producing a board such as this, and IMHO, their warranty is the absolute best in the industry.

I have a BFG 6800GT OC 256mb...IT ROCKS! (AGP 8x, not pci-e)

I haven't overclocked it further past retail, but I will as soon as I get an Arctic-Cooling NV5 Silencer Rev 2.0. (grab one @jab-tech, $20)

The main reason I bought the BFG was warranty. Lifetime, 24/7 tech, and again, LIFETIME!!!! $399@best buy.

BFG Product Page (http://www.bfgtech.com/6800GTOC.html)

I have the newer version (above) with the 2 BlueLed 35mm fans and the all copper plate/heatpipe thingy. With my 4 fans (3case, 1cpu) turned to low, the those 2 mini fans are pretty loud, and they can't possibly move that much air. nVidia drivers say the temp is 57c idle with 65c load. (using AS5 on the GPU and the AS Cremeique 5 on the memory)

I had an XFX and OCd it to 435/1180 and it fried without any warning. I have a PNY now and it runs just fine at the same OC.

The XFX continually reach 68C or higher underload. The PNY is running at 55C under load. :D

Seconded! Due to the guaranteed overclock you're pretty much buying a 6800 Ultra for less. I've got one, and it rocks.

Only thing I'll say is it's HUGE. Blocks out 2 of my 3.5 bays.

b83bandit & crayzboost ,
I have been eyeing a PNY 6800 gt to replace my Xtasy 9600. Are you fairly satisfied? Newegg has refurbs for $310, but I hear that they are more than likely bad OC'ers that have been returned. I am new here and new to modding for that matter. I have a p4c800 with the vdroop and vdimm mod, and I need a good card for oc'ing. With my budget, I think I am set on a 6800, but I am in the same boat as bboe - which one to buy? Is it too much of a gamble on a refurb, or should I stop being a tight wad and cough up the extra $80 for a new one?

Kenshiro

spend a little more and get retail if you don't want to gamble on refurbish products.

I dropped the 9600 into my 2nd rig, and my friend is going to pick it up this weekend. After reading through a tone of threads, I feel a slight bit of anxiety towards buying a new card. I have seen posts debating the 6800u vs. the x800 xt-pe, and I can not separate fact from fan-boy propaganda. I do know that the x800 has slightly higher stock speeds. Which one has more overhead (which one is a better oc'er)? Budget is no longer an issue (though I would like to keep it under $500). However, if these cards are neck and neck in performance (used primarly for gaming), I can get an ultra for less. I do not mean to open a can of worms here, but I could really use some help.

You can't go wrong with either cards.

However, if you plan to keep your "new" card for a longer period of time, and want more room to upgrade, you may want to go with the 6800U. Reason is because of SLI.

ATI is coming up with a dual vid card solution, but you will have to upgrade both your mobo and vid card again.

I think the ultra comes with 1.6ns ram and the CT comes with 2.0ns ram. I will guess the ultra will be slightly faster. Also, I'd seen some ultras o/c beyond 450Mhz on the GPU.
