another good one that is free is U-Serv FTP and it's easy to set up also.

also G6 FTP server and BulletProof FTP server, and if you are running Windows NT, 2000 you can install the IIS FTP server.

If you install the IIS FTP server you also risk the virus' and attacks aimed at IIS. Unless you sit in front of your computer 24 hours a day reading Microsoft's sercurity bulletins. Third party programs are better for those new at FTP and operating a server.

I completely agree with you, except that Microsoft doesn't report that they have screwed up on their bulletin boards until after the fact, let alone put out a fix...

They put out many fixes. Yes it's after the fact, but they do fix them. SP3 for 2000 is on it's way. We have installed some hotfixes at work at Microsofts request and they came from an ftp folder marked SP3.

Serv-U is a good one for beginners, you can run it very simply or very advanced.

SP3 is due out somewhat soon... Just something else I have to upgrade...

ok, thanx to ur help i found an easy ftp program and loaded all my files. But i have 1 more problem. I need to decide how to connect. I have an extra 56k modem lying around but i've been thinking about dsl. So if any of u guys have an ftp server, how should i connect. However i should say I am a teenager and have limited resources to spend. so what should i get and average how much will it cost?

If you can swing it go with DSL it will offer a better upload speed than the 56k and that is what you want with an FTP server. Nothing I hate more is finding something that I want on an FTP and then I can only DL at 5k/sec because the owner decided to put it on a 56k connection. Man that burns me.

ok, i think i'll go with dsl, but if i went with a 56k would i have to stay on the internet all the time for others to download?

Ive been wanting to put up a ftp server for a long time but I couldnt find any good program

I d/l serv-u ftp and I set it up right but I cant connect to the server on this or any other computer

I have no firewalls or anything like that either, just cable with 2 ips for my 2 computers

Im think its just because I dont know what the address would be......

would it be

ftp//ftp.damainnameIchoose.com?

Im most likely WAY off on this one......

iggy,

Yes you would have to be online for people to get to the files.....they can't get them without a connection to you right?

Warlord.
You should be able to access your FTP server from your lan. But you have to go through your ftp serves lan address. If your on computer 1 with an ip of 10.0.0.1, and the ftp server is computer 2 with an ip of 10.0.0.2 then you want to do ftp://10.0.0.2 in order to get to the server from the inside.
