I have two machines that I'd like to RD into at home. They're on a Linksys on cable. I have no trouble with one, using the default port (3389 I think). That is forwarded in the Linksys and works fine.

I set up the other to use 3395 and forwarded that, but I can't connect to it. I use RD as xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:3395 and I think it should work but it doesn't. Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong?

I can use RD on the 3389 box once I'm in that one and get into the 3395 box but I would prefer to just go into it directly.

So did you change the port that windows XP listens to for remote desktop connections? If so, try rebooting the XP machine once.

If you haven't changed the port, search on microsoft.com to find out how. I know you can, I did it at work a while ago, but I lost the location of the registry key.

Also, if you don't want to change the port, and your router can be configured so that the external port is a different one than the port its being forwarded to, you could just do that. Thats what I'm doing right now.

Also make sure RD is enabled on the second machine.

I spent a few days trying to figure it out, only to realize it was not enabled (I had just formatted)..

Interesting idea, to keep the port the same but use an external port that is different and have the router fix it. I did change the port in the registry though.

I think that Norton AV might be helping here. I came in through the 3389 PC a few minutes ago after trying to get into the other one from outside and saw that Norton thought that a worm was trying to get in. I suspect that the "worm" was me coming in through 3395. It might not be the port that is presenting a problem but NAV trying to be helpful.

My solution to that is........

RD into the first machine like you do now, then from the 1st machine RD into the second machine using the local IP "192.168.0.***" . I have the rigs set to static local IPs. It works like this, and I dont go into the second very often.

What is really weird is that I can, from the first machine, RD into the second using the EXTERNAL IP address with :3395 appended! But from outside the network it doesn't work.

I changed the NAV a bit to allow me in, I think, but right now I can't get in to either machine. That happens sometimes and I have no idea why. I think RR is messing up a bit. I know that the main machine is still on because it doubles as my webserver and I can access that, although slowly. I think Bittorrent is using all my bandwidth...

Yea! It works. I have no problem getting in with a different port. I think I'll set up another one for machine number three.

It was NAV causing the problem. Not a knock on NAV, I just had to specifically open it up and let me in.
