View Full Version : Pathetic Speeds from an External Modem

A few days ago, I got an USR external faxmodem. My first test at dslreports got a score of 16/16. I updated the firmware to support v.92, and now I get about 9/9. My old scores with an ISA card was 35/16. The phone lines are only about 10 years old, so that can't be holding me back by much. I also used to connect around 46000, but now I have trouble trying to get past 36000. I also rarely download faster than 1kb/sec now

For now, I'll try to downgrade to v.90 and see if that's the problem

Check your port settings... make sure the port (eg: LPT1) is set to 192000(or bigger), N, 8, 1

Did that. Scores seem better since I've changed the access numbers. My new score is 26/16. Still not as good as my ISA

Well, I'm all out of ideas, unless it's something dumb like line noise, or crosstalk, (bad wiring of house). Also, if you are in the country, or rural areas, the full v90/v92 won't work properly because it switches analog/digital more than once.
You said earlier that you had a faster internal card, so that probably isn't the case.

The only other thing I can suggest is going into bios, and playing around with the options, try starting with that parallel port disabled in bios, and/or ECP, try disabling all the other parallel ports (so as LPT1 isn't sharing resources with another LPT port)
