View Full Version : 100BaseT vs Firewire vs Gigabit Comparison
I found a nice little guide that compares 100BaseT, to Firewires 400mbps LAN, to gigabit ethernet. It also describes problems and solutions to firewire networking. I'm not sure if anyone was looking for something like this, but incase you were:
http://www.faculty.iu-bremen.de/birk/lectures/PC101-2003/13firewire/super_fast_net_ip_1394.htm
the benchmarks on that website are not accurate.
100 baseT gets better than 64 megabits throughput
firewire, when i tried it, got around 120 mbits, instead of 128-144
gigabit ethernet gets much better than 184 megabits of throughput.
even so, firewire is still good for connecting two computers together for more throughput than 100baseT.
other than some of the benchmark numbers, thats a good website, though. :P

Those benchmarks are a little low.
A lot of those speeds depend on your hardware aswell. Specifically gigabit. Having gigabit and 5400RPM or lower harddrives is a waste.
They also do not take into affect JumboFrames. JumboFrames is an option on Gigabit that allows larger frames to be sent.. instead of the 1.5kilobyte frames, you can use 9kilobyte frames for added speed during large transfers.
