I have tried to overclock a mere 840 (112*7.5) with small adjustments in voltage and have not been able to get past post. I receive a message that "CPU inoperable - return to bios" where I can readjust to standard and everything is back to normal. Any suggestions?

WELCOME TO THE FORUMS!
Try 5mhz increments, though that doesn't sound right. What kind of ram are you working with.

So I am thinking I have 448MB and I think it is PC133 SDRAM. Anyway to check without tearing apart my box?

You could try cpu-z, from www.cpuid.com
Some ram companies leave some of the information in the spd table.

Thanks.
Here is what I see.
448 with frequency 1ooMhz, CAS 2.0 clocks, RAS to CAS Delay 3 clocks, RAS Precharge 3 clocks
But:
For each slot:
Slot 1 - 256Mg, PC133, with SPD Timing set to achieve only 100mHZ, CAS latency (2 clocks vs. 3) RAS to CAS (2 vs. 3) and Precharge (2 vs. 3)
Slot 2 - 128MB, PC133, same thing with latencies
Slot 3 - 64MB - PC133
Do (can I) adjust these settings without harming anything?

Yes, you can, latencies can be moved around. Well, have you just tried going to 133mhz, and seeing if it will work? Might be a pci/agp frequency issue.

Without additional cooling, would going directly to 133 be risky?

Tried FSB 133 with memory latencies adjusted to 3 and no go

naa, i took my pc133 straight to 160 on a regular basis, my board didnt like 170 and gave up :-/ this was on a soyo 7VBA133U. good board, crap bios. it let me take my 933EB to 1.05 with ease, i had better screenies, mustve lost em somwhere...

and it ran super cool too

Is there anyone wuth experience OC'ing a PIII 750 Coppermine and an Abit BH-6 board?

That was so long ago for me, I just don't remember enough of it anymore.

Just trying to squeeze the last little bit out of older technology! :)
Sounds like you need to disable the speed error halt... or whatever it's called... it's been so long since I had a BH6.

Batboy, that worked and I have achieved the 112*7.5= 840! How much should I be pushing before I can do damage. Also, what should I use to evaluate stability?

I have now achieved 930 (124*7.5) with core voltage of 1.65 (vs. stock at 1.70). Can anyone suggest how to evaluate longer term stability and cpu temperature?

Prime 95, and download speedfan. If you can run for about 12 hours or more without errors, I say it's stable.
As long as you have a HSF on that chip if you overclock too far you won't do damage. It will just not respond or lock up. Watch your divider. The PCI/AGP overclock can be more of a problem than the chip and cause instablility. Thats a 1.70v chip so you are safe to about 1.9v. I dont suggest you go about 1.85 to be safe. As said before if you can clock it and run Prime95 stable for at least 12 hours you should be good. Go as far as you can within those limits. I have seen some of those chips go to 133FSB. Some are good to over 1gHz! The Coppermines were GREAT processors. Good luck. . Welcome to the Forums. . and let us know how it goes.

Pleased to say that system continues to run at 930 without any significant heat generation. Interesting to note that one of my slave drives went south though. Cannot reformat or anything even though system continues to recognize it in the bios. Could this be related in anyway or just coincidence?
Might be that your PCI is too far out of spec. Seemed like mine would scramble harddrives above 115 FSB.

so back off on oc level to the 112*7.5=840 versus current 930?
Try 112 and see if you get your harddrive back. Sometimes if the data has been corrupted you might have to reformat. I was able to use 115 FSB ok on mine, but always had trouble above that point.

So I reduced to 112 (840) and my Fujitsu HD was recoverable. Then I wnet back to 930 with increased core from 1.7 to 1.75 and lost it again. Other HD's (both Maxtors are ok). I am about to replace main system drive with a WD 80 G so the Fujitsu will go to the graveyard and then we will see what happens.
Sounds like the Fujitsu does like the overclock.

Get a IDE PCI card that likes high PCI speeds. My Iwill HPT370 raid card does well at high FSB for my old-school overclocking experiments :)
I was thinking about picking up a BH6...what are the voltage options for the core and memory? FSB up to 200 right? :)

no, it only gets to 133 with variable multipliers depending on whether the cpu is locked or not. Mine is locked at 7.5 Core is variable from 1.30-1.90.
