Hi , I really don't know what too choose anymore...PIV? AMD 1400?
I have heard so many different things about the 2 , i allready have a system that i o/c (PIII700@1100 1.80vlt cas 222/57) and i need another system that's silent ,reliable, and fast at heavy apps.
I have read the review at tom's hardware but then i have read some other reviews that are saying that the benches where not totally honest. I have read about the AMD 1400 and then the heat issue keeps popping up, is that heat so much that it has to be cooled with a lot of noisy fans or something.?Is the PIV 1800 really such a bad performer or does it keep up with the AMD?
My heart say's Intel but my mind say's maybe AMD?
Please don't reply with flaming at one of the 2 but give me some real solid numbers.
Thanks for your reply's , hope one of them get's me over the line.:(
if i were u, i wouldn't buy a cpu right now, because your pc is too fast.. If u must buy i'd buy the intel p4 1700 one and maybe @~1900.. The athlon is generally faster than the pentim 4 1400 one, but in this difference gets bitten in almost all sectors.. bye bye
Yep, it's a toss up. Both systems have pros and cons. The AMD setup will probably be cheaper and will run with the P-4 at least in many benchmarks up to maybe 1.7 gig. The newer 1.8 to 2 gig P-4 are starting to pull away from AMD mainly just from the pure processor speed, but they're not cheap. If you can hold off another couple of months, the Northwood P-4 will be the obvious choice for heavy applications, no doubt.

I agree with Mr. Batboy. :p
Mr. Batboy is one of the persons who knows and understands about the Northwood P4. Unfortunately, many people don't know about it. Some of them don't even know there will be Northwood P4 coming out. Some think since it's P4, no matter what kind of version it is, it's gonna suck period cauze it is P4.
There is no match.. No other CPUs in this globe will even come close to the performance of Northwood P4. The current version of P4 sucks in mhz to mhz comparison with the T-bird no doubt. Everyone knows.
The current version of P4 is for the "general public users" who don't know anything about computers, who don't build computers, who don't OC, most importantly, who only look at "mhz".
My suggestion, like what Mr. Batboy has said, wait a few months and get the Northwood P4. It's gonna be pricey.. but it's worth it in my opinion. Try reading more about that P4. I need to do some more reading as well. Good luck!

wait for the northwood....if you must buy one right now i would say go with the athlon...however if you want to oc...be ready for loud delta 38cfm fans that sound like vacuum cleaners...or watercooling.....the 2.2ghz northwoood when it comes out would be the cpu of choice.....

here's what i just built. It's super fast, no frills, inexpensive, and does what I need it to do. I use it for Engineering Apps/Gaming.
Shuttle AK31 Mobo
TBird 1.4 GHz
768 MB DDR Ram (3X256 Crucial)
Geforce2 Pro
IBM Deskstar 40GB 7200RPM ATA 100 HD
CAK38 Heatsink/Fan
If you need a system right now, i'd say go with an AMD system similar to this. If you don't need it right away, i'd wait. The Northwood P4 looks very promising (but expensive...)
Also, don't worry too much about temps. the 1.4 TBird with the CAK38 stays at a cool 40C under load. Noise isn't bad either. With the case closed, noise is negligible from the Delta Fan. Only slightly louder than my PII333.
Total cost was around $700, which I think is extremely cheap for what I got. Hope this helps.
like others have said, it's a toss up, and personally I would wait several months if at all possible. By then we'll have northwood which will overclock initially up to 2.5 or so. I'm seeing some more recent silicone that will do 2.9 so who knows what their yields will be by then. We'll also see where AMD is going with the Palomino by then. Like somebody else said, be ready for some heavy duty cooling if you go the AMD route. At the very least you'll be using air cooling with a screamer of a fan.

Thanks for the help guy's , i will leave the AMD's for what they are and buy the PIIII 2ghz , i can't wait a couple months because i need the sys for work, i will wait untill al is settled with Intel cpu's and then buy the best one, meanwhile this cpu (2ghz) will do the job and goes to my kid when i get a new one.
Again thanks !
Great thread it is nice that everyone is giving out such good advice and no flames at all! I think the shuttle system is very nice for 700 bucks. How much will the northwood systems go for in the beginning? around 2grand? I would also like to know if Intel has announced when they are coming out. Before Christmas or After?

It manly depends on your budget if you gotta have it now then amd is your best bet, but if you have time wait untill northwood to check on there prices.
If your are going amd:
There are some very good, silent hsf that will chill that hot cpu even overclocked.
Intel:
The better choice for slience but expen$ive. and you have to deal with the rambus (a pain in the neck).
I perfer amd because of price and thay have the edge on performance. I have tested a 1.4 p4 and a 1.2 t-bird and the t-bird was a little faster.

what video? ohhh...... that video.... :D :D :D... a cpu without a heatsink... who does that anyway?
I think the main point of that was to show what could happen if HS isnt seated correctly or if fan fails
Although I had a fan fail on duron 900 at stock speed with retail HS/F and temps got up to 99C in the bios....still runs now....ran for almost a week with no fan and now its running at 1.2

The video is showing the worst case senario. Hsf falls off and cpu is naked. AMD will not survive Intel maybe. Ain't nothin guaranteed with silicon. Oh yea Deez. Thanks for the burnin tip.:D

I think the video from Tom's hardware is not a reason to leave the Athlon's , in fact i find the video is a cheap shot. This shows me that i can't rely on tom's reviews anymore , there where some more critic's about his way of testing cpu's and heatsink, the setup they use for testing isn't as objective as it should be. I dont have anything against Tom's Hardware, i was a regular on reading his reviews when i whas looking for some new hardware.
BTW , i have NEVER known anybody who's complete heatsink fell of !! nor has it happened to me in maybe the 10\15 years i use cpu's, and believe me in ha done some weird stuff with them, if a heatsink should have fallen of then it must have happened to me!!
