View Full Version : How to install a window

On request I'm posting this short how to on putting in a window

1) First I taped the door off. With a pencil, ruler and measuring tape I measured all the drive cages power supply ex. and drew it on the door (I advise you to take any handles etc.. off so they don't get scratched or in your way)

2) Next what I did is looked at what I had to work with. so I could decide what shape window would look best and I could make sure that everything I wanted to show through the window did. (and what I didn't want to show didn't)

3) After I sketched out what I wanted, I took the ruler (for my straight lines) and a cd and also a smaller round object (for the corners) and drew my final window.

rUfUnKy
09-23-01, 04:26 PM
4) I then clamped my door to the table with a towel in between the clamp and door.I used a RTX (like a dremal) for half of this then decided to borrow a jig saw. I advise you use the jigsaw (with a thin metal plastic 21 tpi blade) cuts like butter.

( Don't forget to wear your safty glasses!! :) )

5) Now without removing the tape I debured all the edges with my RTX.

6) For the trim I used car door trim (get it any auto parts store)

7) Last I used a piece of lexan that I got at a local plastics shop.
you can use liquid nails or double sided tape to hold it to the door (I used D/S tape) and that's about it hope this helps....

Nice to see such flare!
Beats the traditional square or rectangular hole. In fact I think I`m that impressed I`ll go for a simular shape myself.

Between the Lexan and the panel, what's that in between it? I'm planning to put a window as well soon.

As for a dremel. How much cut-off wheels did you use for the first portion?

after 2 sheets of Lucite acrylic being glued on, i think i'm giving up on trying to glue it. I keep getting smudges of glue over it and i dunno how to get the epoxy smudges off!
That chrome molding looks kinda cool and I might end up getting me some of that. Anyways, i think i'm just going to go with velcro!! yes i think i'm going to velcro my window in. This way it would be easy to take out if i ever decide to repaint my case a different color.

Snewpors ... Paint thinner should get epoxy off the window.. Remember to wash it off though... Also use liquid nails .. Its the best stuff and you can get a tube of liquid nails for under $2.50. I personally use liquid nails clear ;-)

Any suggestions for cutting a fan hole in my window? I'm doing a window, but don't want to lose my 80mm duct and my 92mm AGP exhaust fan. I'm mostly concerned with cutting the window...is there a tool that is far superior to others? The window won't split and crack if I use my industrial griner (BIG dremel) will it? I looked for hole saws, but can't find any up to 92mm around here. I saw one large enough for an 80mm at Home Depot, but didn't pick it up. Anyone seen them online? Hmmmm...bet the hole saw would be worse for the plexiglass...???

Thanks for any input.

wildbilly2k
07-19-02, 08:33 PM
well make sure you get lexan then it wont break for sure. I used a saber saw which is just the same as a jig saw and i used a metal cutting blade and it worked fine but cutting the metal even with metal cutting blades sucked @$$ even though my window turned out very well

What would be the recommended thjickness for the window? I have an old piece of plexie glass that I could use but it is about 3/16" thick. Would this be thick enough to withstand small impacts like a computer case would lily take?

wildbilly2k
08-08-02, 09:56 PM
i used 1/8th piece of lexan and it is really strong so that 3/16 piece of plexi should do fine but be careful when cutting it may break crack or split

Warren G
08-12-02, 01:39 AM
when you make the edges of the window for the case, does it have to be rounded or could it just be a straight cut (90 degree type) cut so i can put moldings in.

illbreakit
08-12-02, 07:37 AM
need a little curve to bend the molding around easier. Just experiment with the molding you are going to use and see how sharp of a bend it will make, then cut your hole to match. But, if you cut real nice and are painting your case at the same time, you don't even need molding.

Guys you dont have too glue, tape or velcro the lexan

Where I work we build machinary for the printing industry
& theres holes & lexan all over the bodies of the machiens

we use a black rubber trim, it has a bead that goes in from the back side & ya gota squirt it with a lil soapy water to get the glass in but its very professional looking & would probly be just the ticket for what your doing here

anotherwords the glass is mounted into the hole not behind it

god I wish I could rember the name of the stuff but im sure anyone who sells lexan or plexiglass will have the black trim too mount it !!! just ask them for some mounting trim

Ill go too work tomorow & get the exzact name of that trim & repost it here it realy does look very good & it comes in different sizes & colors I belive as well:D

I have a question: Once i have cut the hole and i have my trim around the edge. How does the Plexi stay in because surely there will be a gap between the Plexi and the case where the trim is. Kind of hard to explain.

Acko
06-04-03, 01:15 PM
Hi Chris

There is a working tolerance between the rubber strip & the Plexi. There is also an inner strip which is pushed into the rubber which takes up the slack around the window. UR right it is kind of hard to explain but all will come good when you have your kit.

I still dont get how it works though because surely once you put the trim around the hole in the case door, the window will stand proud of the case panel and leave a gap. Or do you have to cut the lexan exactly to shape so it fits into the trim?

well i got up the gutz and cut my own....

had fun... well now I know why you tape the painted side... slipped while deburring multiple times and now it is scratched up...

i guess i have to paint it now...

I cut as close to straight as a could and sanded / filed down what wasn't and can't get it perfect (near but if you look closely you can see it is not perfectly straight.) so I also see the point of the trim lol :-)

dont have a camera otherwize i would post pic.

1st If there is a pic that needs to be hosted and it is alright with ruFunky, I will host it for people.

Wanna know the same....Was the car door trim, like the trim used in window kits where the window goes into the side panel (cut the same shape as the hole)? Or is it flush mount to the case so no gap and can be fastened to the back of the side panel?

Hey! All

Great tutorial rUfUnKy ....Looks awsome, congratulations!

Has anyone sourced the Lexan window material and that cool Chrome edging in the UK. I can't find anywhere that sells this stuff for reasonable prices??

Also how many meters of edging would a good sized window project require??

Man!... the UK always lags behind with computer stuff. We still have to pay through the nose for the stuff which you guys get on NewEgg for cheap. Plus you get free shipping:rolleyes:

Hey guys,
I heard a few questions about how the car door trim works, and since I've done the same thing as RuFunky to my case, I figured I'll answer you guys. Yes, the trim does create a lip that goes around the window, you could cut the trim in half to avoid that, but it doesn't look as good.
To get around this, I used sticky sided velcro( I got like 8ft of it from home depot) and put it around the window. The velcro turns out to be thicker than the door trim so it won't fall off, plus if you want to replace the window at a later date, its easy to take off.
Hope this helps

mtb856
04-30-04, 12:24 PM
kemosabe,
I used about 4-5 feet (1.2-1.5m) of the car door trim, although my window was fairly large, so you could get by with a little less depending on what you want to do. What you need to watch out for is the trim doesn't bend very well around tight corners, the top left corner in this pic is about as tight as I could get it to go. - I tried to make my window a little different from RuFunky's,but it turned out to be almost outright plagiarism. :( oh well http://img55.photobucket.com/albums/v168/mtb856/Computer%20Mods/computerlighted.jpg

I just started the thread and it has pics of my new hole saw.

It was a bit pricey. 54$ CDN for just the hole saw, not including the arbor in the middle with the drill bit. But it is Milwakie brand. #1 in my opinion. I have 3 diffrent Milwaike brand saws and none of them have ever gone dull cutting through many many steel cases.

P.S. sorry if the pics were down in this thread. The box I was working on for the new fan mod in the other thread, is also the one that hosts the window install pics for this thread. I try to keep the pics up as much as possible, but sometimes my drill and I get an itchy trigger finger and I have to mod something just to keep myself sain.

Yeah, it's not hopeless, just get the edges as smooth as possible and then use rubber trim or that car door trim to cover up the ragged edges. That should protect your window from being scratched. Nice job on the window/fan placement, though, I like how it's set up.

I am the guy hosting all the pics for this thread, and the time has come to finally retire the Ausus P3B-F MB and P3-550 Slot one CPU. The server will be going offline for about 24hrs while I upgrade the rig and do a complete cleaning of the machine. Re-install windows and all that good stuff.

So the pics are going to be down, but don't worry, I will have everything back up and running as quickly as I can.

OK, I don't know how many of you are still paying attention to this thread, but I had some q's. First off, great guide, I've had a design in mind that I want to put into an old case that I'll be using for travelling, and now I think I'll be able to do it.

First: I live in an apt and don't have any of these tools. The most I have is an electric drill (crappy, I know). In any case, I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to a way around this problem? Should I bite the bullet and go out and purchase the tools needed (in which case, a list of tools needed for mod'ing cases would be nice), or does anyone know of big chains (Loews, Home Depot) that possibly will work with me by letting me pay them to do quick jobs or something? My only issue is that I'm only mod'ing this case, and I can imagine mod'ing more in the future but being in school I don't have a whole lot of extra cash to throw around (mainly on cases, so buying the tools for 1 job almost seems pointless. None the less, you gotta do what you gotta do.

Again, great guide!!

The no pic was and will be my fault. Sorry. I have been hosting the pics for over a year or so for this thread on my personal server at my house, but.....

:p

I recently got an INTERNET upgrade to 7mb down / 1.5mb up. So I fired up my torrent server again. Note the total download speeds at the bottom. My issue is even though I am not using even close to my total bandwidth with the FTP/Torrent/Web server apps, it on occasion kills all the traffic except the torrent program.

DISCLAIMER

I am not in the USA nore do I condone pirating of any software or doing bad things.

Oh here is da pic. If it won't work. Sorry you will need to try again later.

Yep shaw extreme-1 Docsis with the Motorola Surfboard. I LOVE IT!!!!!!! 7mb down and 1.5mbps up. Yaa Baby.

I am loving it. Problem is I am filling up hard drives way to fast. Server has 6 drives running it in it now, and I am going to have to buy a couple 250's to replace a few aging 80's.

Shaw and I have a great relationship, I don't ask for there help unless it is a hardware issue or low signal problem that I "can't" fix. And they don't send me messages for going over my "bandwidth limit"

But back to windows. Did I ever post a pic of the server window I made. 30" tall server case and I put a full lenght custom window in it.

The pics are quite old, it has a new MB, new PSU, more drives and several other upgrades. Somewhere on this forum there is a 5 or 6 page build thread with like 80 pics.

I try to keep it up as much as possible, I think I get about 90% uptime with it. I don't mind helping out with pic hosting when I can.

I recently revised my network setup as I found my issue with people not being able to get to the server was my torrents were getting so many connections that it was over taxing my router. ( trying to pump 7mb down 1.5mb up through a 4 year old netgear router was just too much for it.

I split up my network using a 4 port switch off of the cable modem into 2 seperate routers leaving the torrents and server on its own router with no other traffic and all seems to be well. It did change my IP but I think I updated all the links that were using my IP addy rather than my domain name.

Well in short.

Glad to be of help.

---------------

Now if I could just convince my ISP that the 120gig of torrents I downloaded in december was legit becuase it was only TV shows I would be perfect.

look guys u dont need car door trim, just simply take a thicker wire nd cut right down the middle over he whole length
take out the actul wire and just fit the wire casing around the door

and for the appartment guy, get a dremel they are prolly the most handiest too in the world

Figured I would throw my attempt based on this thread.

My case is kinda a holey thing.

Old pic from last summer (I think)
http://www.jagged-empire.com/images/oroka/001.jpg

So, I woke up really eairly 2 days ago, and decided I was putting a window in my case. I had a really bad experiance putting a window in my last case, but this I had all the proper tools (drill, jig saw, etc).
http://www.jagged-empire.com/images/oroka/002.jpg

Put some of that low tack painters tape over the panel.
http://www.jagged-empire.com/images/oroka/003.jpg

I drilled some holes in the corners to start the cuts with jig saw. My GF would kill me if she knew I was doing this on the rug ;)
http://www.jagged-empire.com/images/oroka/004.jpg

Cut cut cut. File down the edges to make it purdie.
http://www.jagged-empire.com/images/oroka/005.jpg

Put some car door trim on the edges.
http://www.jagged-empire.com/images/oroka/006.jpg

My case had a filter on the inside, that had screws on the outside holding it on, so I just used the holes for that to screw the lexan on. Sorry, forgot to take pics of that.

wap the sucka on, and it is teh kewl!!1!1one! That fan on the heatsink is spinning at like... a bazillion rpm, no blurrrrrrrrrrry.

Future plans are maybe a window on the top, maybe some tin foil under the remaining mesh, and I might paint the chassie black.

I am going to be doing some major hardware changes over the next few days. Oct 8th to the 12th. So the pics may be down here and there. The server started acting up after the last round of upgrades so I have to chase down what is the issue.

Its almost hard to believe this thread is still around after all these years. Well I did a major update and uploaded 25gig to a new off site server. I did a re-check and all the photos from this thread moved just fine and everyone should be able to see all the pics from the first page. New server is 100mbps upstream, 2.5 TB of data transfer per month and only costs me $120 per year. See ya all on the flip side.
