Ok guys, this is a really dumb question but:
How do I let Win '98 machines have access to files on a Win2k Server system? Win2000 machines have no problem b/c when you double-click on the computer in Network Neighborhood or whatever, it asks for a USERNAME and password. I make an account on the server, allow it access, and its easy. When you do the same thing on Win '98, it doesn't ask for a password, and none of the account passwords work! It does say something about "IPC$" or something like that, but I can't mess w/ that account under W2k Server for some reason. Please help, I know this has to be something dumb.

Don't mess with $IPC, $C, or $ADMIN, they are default shares and will screw up your computer if you mess with them.

Make sure the username that you are logged in as on your windows 98 machine is the username of an account on the Win2k machine, that has permissions on the shares to do what you want to do.

If that doesn't work, you can enable the guest account on the win2k machine.

You don't need to make an account on the win98 machine for your win2k machine, just set shares.

When you try to use your win2k machine with your win98 machine, (and you have win2k set up with the username that win98 is logged in as), it should let you in.

Thanks, matching up the name they use to "login" to their Win '98 machine with the account on 2k was the step I was missing.
