View Full Version : Can't take the noise anymore... Watercooling.

I'm FED UP with these FANS. I just modded my generic case...added 3 more fans. Although there are all around 30 DB's I have 8 fans total now. It is about to drive me insane.
So.... I have decided I am going to go with water cooling... sadly I know nothing about really.... Although I am certain I don't want more then 1-2 fans in my whole system.
So... I need some recommendations about what to get, I can probably swipe a radiator out of some car at a junkyard or something so I don't think I'll have too much problems with getting that.
So what for the pump, waterblock, etc? Water wetter? I will also need a new case... I'm fairly sure I will get a Lian-Li PC70.... but It will be a while before I can get one of those as the price is a bit over my head right now... I'm living on a 15 year olds cash input.
As always, any input is welcome.
There is no need for such extreme and expensive measures. Go into the case cooling section on the front page and read Good Air/Bad Air , Good Fans/Bad Fans Good Grief! by John"Hoot"Hill , I recommend buying the 2C647 (with no regulation use all 134cfm)which an AC motor unless you feel comfirtable with the LM338K resistor setup and the brush DC motor noise.
Good Luck
PS whats your room temp. , if its to warm you will never get the temps you so despretly desire (warm=28°C or more)
Welcome to the "sick of noise crew" i just gave up on my 11 fan case :( way too much noise, got my self a new case and a watercool kit by becooling, cant really tell you if its loud or quite at all cause i havent set it up yet ;) but the only thing i thought that would make noise was the waterpump and i turn it on just to see how noisie it was and i couldnt even tell if it was on or off cuase i didnt hear anything :p
so wwwwwaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy much better now ;)

Where I live it is fairly difficult. I live in Atlanta, GA...so in the summer/fall months it gets pretty hot outside...yesterday it hit 90ºF. I know I could make my air cooling more efficient but at the cost of what?...more noise! I listen to music constantly, and there is a point when they just start to mumble because of the fans. I also have to sleep in the same room.... not very pretty.
Guys, I want to go watercooling. Now.... can ya just give me some advice on what to get?
As for the pump everyone on icontic thinks I should get the Eheim 1048 pump, and the DangerDen Maze2 Waterblock.

Also, my room temp right now is roughly 27ºC... but that is because of my comp.. without it on for about an hour it goes down to 24ºC.

Hehe.... I'm glad I don't live in FL... Too humid =p
Very TRUE! i live in florida and i have to admit that is too damn humid here :( that kills my system temp right there! but i always kick my AC cranked up :) that's why my light bill its so damn expensive LOL

that pump and waterblock should do you real good.
my suggestion is to get a DD cooling cube w/ a 120mm fan on it. put 1 or 2 120mm fans for case airflow. this leaves you with 3 fans. then go out and buy 3 rheostats from radio shack (the 3w kind) and add them to each of your 120mm fans.
even with the rheo's cranked all the way (slows the fan down) you'll still push a lot of air around, but with hardly any noise at all. i've noticed that when i turn my rheo's all the way down, the cpu temps only rise by about 2C under load. that's my $.02.
another thing, when you do manage to get your watercooling up, notice that your temp readings will most likely be higher than the actual core temps (i am guessing that this is a software compensation for the airflow caused by the HSF). i find that by blowing a fan over the waterblock, the MBM temps drop quite a bit (they actually match my probe that is touching the core).

DD = Danger Den?
I'm very familiar with rheostats.... I can probably swipe some for free from my electonics class and just tell him I'm doing a project.
For fans on the radiator I'll just get 1 or 2 Panaflow 120mm Whisper fans... barely scratch 30 dB, they move a good amount of air and a very quiet.
Well, I guess I have everything planned out... though it will take me a month or more to get everything... I only have about $70 to spend right now, there is the waterblock and some waterwetter right there.

Also, I need a waterblock for my chipset/ video card. These will most likely come later but, should I also get them from Danger Den?

If you have access to a drill and a butane torch you may be able to build a water block yourself. Ive seen them made from copper pipe caps and a piece of copper barstock. I just got an idea for a protoype while typing this. Take a 2" copper cap and drill two holes for a 1/4" NPT 3/8" barb fittings. Solder this to a 2"x 3.25" x1/8" piece of copper bar. Drill four holes to mount it to the mobo with bolts through the four holes. I think I will look for the parts tommorrow night and if I make one I'll post the pics here.
O
i built my own waterblock...cost me a total of $5, and i didnt really need any special tools either. just a hacksaw, file, drill, some jb weld and epoxy. http://www.geocities.com/biztyke1/block.html for pics.
it performs like a champ, right now my duron 700 is sitting at 1050mhz(10 x 105) with a vcore of 2.2v....my temp after playing UT for 2 hours.....43c. at stock speed and voltage, using a stock hsf my temp would hover in the mid 50s at idle.
water cooling can be very cheap and effective, the expensive parts are usually the radiator, pump and waterblock.
radiator=used heater core
pump=cant skimp really on this one....unless you find one used
waterblock=make it.
total cost of my watercooling system? $50.
EDIT: btw, those pics are from right after i dove into watercooling(so to speak). i have since learned NOT to blow the radiator onto the motherboard. i have also learned that that fan placement probably just makes the thermosistor transmit the actual temps. and i have replaced that huge transmission cooler with a heater core. oh yeah...ive also gone to a 24" case....much better.

Well, I dont really want to try and make my own right now... and if I did I'ld do it on a mill that I have access to.

Oh and, I'm hoping for much better temps than 43ºC... I get those now under full load with air cooling.

But you said your major grip was noise, not temps. If you could get 43 with no noise wouldnt that solve your problem?
keep in mind my setup though. 43c full load at 2.2v with a 350mhz(50%) oc on a $5 waterblock aint too shabby at all. at 900mhz and 1.9v it runs at 34c full load. plus.....ive got a much, much quieter system than i did before.
your choice though. i figured id give some input seeing as how your on a 15 year old's budget.... i would have thought youd want to do it on the cheap.
then again, maybe your cash flow is a little nicer than mine was at age 15.

Don't get me wrong, If I could make a waterblock that is as high quality as a name brand one.... I'd be first in line. Unfortunatly I can't.... I have minimal experiance with a mill, or cutting copper for that matter.
Well, for a 15 year old, I do have somewhat of a Job, part time only though. And I also have to save up for a car and I don't want to cut into that budget....see where I'm getting?
WyrmMaster - My major gripe is noise. But I also want my system to be cool... I'm not going to want a system just as warm as my aircooled... So I'm really after 2 things.
